Bespoke Shower Door doesn't fit

Options
I employed a plumber who does bathroom installations to fit out a new bathroom in a loft conversion. As it has a sloping ceiling it had to have a bespoke shower door made. The plumber ordered a Romans door and frame from a trade retailer and then fitted it. Most of it is OK but one part of the frame, next to the door opening, appears too short. It is over 1cm from the ceiling. As the ceiling slopes and the frame is metal it has an extremely sharp point at about elbow height. The plumbers agree that it is unsafe (and it also looks ridiculous) but say that it has to be short or they couldn't fit it. They think Romans should provide a cap for it but Romans say they don't provide them. I think that if it is bespoke it should be made to fit and so I would rather the frame actually reached the ceiling, although safety is obviously paramount, so a cap would be better than nothing. Romans are totally useless - they want to charge £65 to come and look at it!

The plumbers now want me to write to Romans asking them to accept responsibility for the safety of their product, to which I initially agreed but now am having second thoughts as I feel that as I employed the plumber that they should really sort it out for me.

I am currently withholding £1000 from the plumbers until this is sorted. Could someone please tell me a) whether I am right to think that the plumbers are legally responsible should it get that far, b) whether it's true that it's not possible for this piece of frame to reach the ceiling, c) in extremis am I entitled to ask them to take the whole thing away and replace it with one that is designed differently so that the frame can fit exactly?

Sorry it's such a long story but I feel I have reached a bit of an impasse and don't know what to do next.

Thanks very much.

Your agreement is with the plumber not Romans and you really should not need to get involved with the plumbers supplier in any way ! The plumber should be arranging with their supplier to come and look at it not you.
