Question About Tyres - Help!

My car currently runs on 225/45/18s. I need new tyres soon, however could I put 225/40/18s on it instead? If i can then I will save £200!

No, they'd be a different size. The hole in the middle would be OK but the "height" of the tyre would be 90mm instead of 101.25.
Mytyres.co.uk will do Dunlop SP Sport in 225/45/ZR18 size for £100, Nankangs at £71.60, or ten others at a good price.

    Which car do you have?

You could check in your handbook, what are the alternative sizes, fitted to the same model, but at different secifications, letting you use the cheaper option.

But you need to be aware, the lower profile/less side wall height, will certainly affect handling/comfort/roadholding/tyre waer...& you MIGHT even need to tell your insurance company, that you'carried out a modification, to the standard vehicle!!!

All that aside, the answer IMO is yes you can do it, but you will need to be aware of the affect this will have on your speedometer..

I make it when your speedo reads 60mph you're actually doing 58.5mph so it's not too much different and it's over reading not under reading (which is good). And your ride height will be 1cm less.

None of this would deter me from doing what you want to do, but I'd make sure I really was saving money first, by phoning around and looking online etc.

Exactly. If you can get a set of "correct" tyres for under £300, it's hard to see where £200 can be shaved off this.
A longer-term saving would e to put 16/17" wheels on instead. This would permit use of cheaper and longer lasting tyres.

Putting the lower profile on the car will not do any harm, if anything it will make the car handle a wee bit better;), BUT it would make the ride a wee bit harsher, due to the lower profile of the tyre.
