Hot water tank in strange place

A house that we have gone to view doesn't have a loft so the hot water tank is on the first floor, where a normal airing cupborad would be. Then the airing cupboard is downstairs in the kitchen.

My question is: Is it possible to have a shower installed on the same level as the hot water tank, i.e. in the bathroom, which is next to it. There is no shower there at present. Would water pressure be a problem?

If it is impossible to install a shower or it will be really expensive to do so, we obviously won't go for this house.

Thanks for any help.

My mother had this in her previous house. The answer is a powershower. I'm not sure how much it cost her to have installed, around £200 I think, plus the cost of the unit. I should point out that where she lived (Lincolnshire) tradesmen are very cheap, so this cost will depend on where you live. These things feed from the mains, so water pressure isn't a problem. In her case, not only was the hot water tank in the bathroom, the cold water tank was also.

What decides the pressure at the shower head is the height of the cold water tank that supplies the hot water cylinder.

You could have the hot water cylinder downstairs and the shower upstairs if the cold water tank was higher than the shower head.
    The higher the better.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Yes, I could have been clearer that it's the cold water tank location that is the kicker. Incidentally, how can you have an airing cupboard without a hot water heater in it? I thought the whole point of an airing cupboard was that it was the cupboard which had the hot water heater in it.

  • My hot water tank is in the kitchen and I like it because it's very close to the sink so I don't need to run off lots of cold every time I use the kitchen sink and that is the one I use most.

I think it is the cold tank which feeds an electric shower. Ours in in the loft and it works well. The higher the better. If the cold tank is level with the shower or lower you will need a pump to be installed.

    How new is the house?

If it's new, then perhaps the system isn't gravity-fed. Whereas "traditional" systems feed into a cold water tank in the loft, many new houses have a pressurised system. It that's the case, then there's no cold water tank and you may not need a power shower e.g. in my place both the hot & cold water is at mains pressure.

Either ask the vendors, or turn the taps on upstairs when you view again to see how much pressure there is....
