Car insurance needed for son aged 19 with Pass Plus

My mother is getting a new car next week and wants to give her old car to my son. He has been driving on my insurance as a named driver for the past 2 years without any accidents, he has the Pass Plus certificate and he will be 20 in May. I checked around a few sites and got some ridiculous quotes of up to £4700 for third party cover. I'm insured with NU Direct and asked them how much it would cost for a policy in his own name and they said that as he had the Pass Plus he would get a discount but the cover would be fully comprehensive at a premium of £1669. He can't afford that amount of money as he is a student so I was wondering if anyone knew of a cheaper way to get him covered. As I already have full no claims discount on my car would I be able to take out another policy for a 2nd car in my name with my son as a named driver and would I still be able to get the same no claims discount on the second car? Hope someone can help as my son was looking forward to having his own car but at that price it's not going to be possible.

Hi there,
In answer to your questions:
It will not be possible to use your no claims on 2 different policies (some companies do offer this but only if you're the sole user of the vehicles). Also, insuring a vehicle in your name and having your son as a named driver when he will be the main user is known as 'fronting' and the insurance company could refuse to pay out in the event of an accident.
Some cheaper insurance companies that I have found for young drivers include Direct Line, elephant and tesco are relatively cheap also.
Obviously, a number of factors come into play when buying car insurance; the car insurance group, regional location, experience, no claims, age etc. The high prices may relate to a higher insurance group car - what is it?
You do however mention that your son has been driving as a named driver for some time, some insurance companies will give discount for this on merit if your insurer provides proof of claim free driving.
Buying online often gives a discount (10% in most cases). If the car is under £3000 in value then third party fire and theft should suffice and bring the cover premium down.
Also (including Norwich Union I think), some comapnies offer a 'Bonus accelerator' scheme where the premium is cheaper as it covers the driver for 10 months but they will accumulate 1 Year (30% discount) no claims bonus after 10 months.
Finally, directline are offering some very good schemes icnluding Named Driver discounts, matched no claims discount etc. These may be worth looking at - see their website.
Hope this helps.

Thanks mbm for taking the time to reply. I have had a look at the Rapid Bonus (9 month) policy with Norwich Union but it isn't any cheaper. The car is a 1997 Rover 214 iS and NU won't give any further discount on the premium already quoted even though my son has been a claim free named driver on my policy with them. I did get a slightly cheaper quote with a lower excess through Nationwide which didn't include the Pass Plus discount but when I rang them to get a further discount they said that their terms and conditions wouldn't allow the Pass Plus discount as he needed to take out the insurance in his own name within 1 year of passing his test and the quote already included a 10% online discount. I will try your suggestions, thanks again for your help.0

Hi - try dna insurance.Their site allows pass plus discount and asks the date when pass plus was obtained so they will know it was over a year ago.Rover 214 with a 1.4 engine is not the cheapest car for a 19 year old lad to insure so also try quinn direct who allow discount for named driver experience.
Agree that tpft is the best way to go.Also include yourself as a named driver as an older female driver on the policy normally brings the price down.
Best of luck0 -
You may find the pru (Prudential) of use.
I am on a provisional license and was getting silly quotes for TPFT everywhere and the pru quoted me £1000 fully comp!
Students also get a discount with them but after getting your quote online give them a ring and it may be reduced like mine.
Hope this helps.:happyhear We are not put on this earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other.

I tried adding myself as a named driver on some of the quotes but unfortunately the premium increased. The cheapest I've found so far is with Elephant, £1235.54 TPFT, 10 month bonus accelerator with a £250 excess. Thanks for your comments I will have a look at dna and quinn.maclean2 wrote:Hi - try dna insurance.Their site allows pass plus discount and asks the date when pass plus was obtained so they will know it was over a year ago.Rover 214 with a 1.4 engine is not the cheapest car for a 19 year old lad to insure so also try quinn direct who allow discount for named driver experience.

That sounds more like it, I will try the pru.specialK wrote:You may find the pru (Prudential) of use.

i thought that normally norwich union were way cheapest for young lads .
certainly for ours they were at least 30% cheaper than anyone else .
Differrent for girls though .... just been looking at daughters tonight ... norwich union about 30% dearer than many others . Best by a mile is endsleigh ... with zurich !!0 -
Norwich Union quoted me about £300 more than I am currently paying when they quoted me happy. I'm now 23 and have found that the cheapest are elephant/admiral.
Do a search on www.confused.com and save yourslef the effort of typing the details in lots!
Make sure you add yourself as a named driver too. Adding my mum saved me £100 off my quote (adding my dad would have cost me an extra £50!)0 -

My son's Pass Plus booklet says that it can be deferred for up to 2 years if driving on someone else's policy. I would ask them to check this out.0 -
It is less than a year since my son received his Pass Plus certificate but it is more than a year since he passed his driving test and according to Nationwide's T&C they cannot give the Pass Plus discount if he doesn't take out insurance in his own name within a year of passing his driving test.jem16 wrote:My son's Pass Plus booklet says that it can be deferred for up to 2 years if driving on someone else's policy. I did query this with them over the phone and although their motor policies are underwritten by Churchill they have their own (weird) terms and conditions so they wouldn't budge.
Never mind I have now found a much more affordable quote from Admiral on a 10 month bonus accelerator, third party fire and theft policy at a premium of £943.45 with a £250 compulsory excess and it also includes me as a named driver. Thank you to everyone who offered advice.0
