Corian Worktops

We are planning a new kitchen and i have been to john lewis today and discovered corian worktops. I love the colours and the look of it and was just wondering if anybody has it and if they can recommend it? Also im guessing that john lewis will be the most expensive place to buy it so does anyone know wehere else i can get it?

If there is a similar looking better product or a just as good cheaper product than i would love all help

cheers

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper
Recommended, but it's very expensive. IIRC upwards of £80 a linear metre. There are cheaper similar products available.

John Lewis will without a shadow of a doubt be more expensive than using a fabricator directly. They'll just act as a middle man and add there margin to the fabricators price.

I'm not sure where you are based, however in Yorkshire, I can recommend Whitehall Fabrication, and Sheridan Fabrications. Both are quite large outfits and will fabricate and fit your new worktops. In the South I would recommend BSF Solid Surfaces.

I personally think Corian is an expensive Solid Surface, but has become a household name. There are also Formica's Surrell, Swanstone, Samsung's Staron, LG Hi-Macs, Velstone, Wilsonart and Avonite. Stick to these brands and you will be ok.

Most of the fabricators will offer multiple brands of Solid Surface depending on the relationship they have with the companies. But the key to a good finish, is definitely a quality fabricator. A good fabricator will be able to offer match wash basins / sinks. Off cuts will be used to create chopping boards, butchers blocks. Surfaces will be routed to include drainers, and joints will be well colour matched and seamless.

The fabricator will template your kitchen and taylor make to your exact requirements.

There are a number of smaller solid surface manufacturers around, but I really can't recommend them, they come and go, few survive. Hardly surprising, when big names such as Samsung, LG and Formica invest in their products.

All the above names have websites, and some may point you in the direction of Fabricators more local to you. Google's your friend.

We've had Corian put in, and really like the finished product. It was supplied by Sheridan, but we actually bought it from Magnet, as the deal we got was very competitive - lots of kitchen suppliers have samples, so would probably be able to quote you.

One thing you might want to know is that, as we had a light bluey/green colour (sea glass, I think) and an integrated sink, it comes with a stainless steel liner as an integrated part of the base. Within a couple of weeks, the steel had what seemed to be rust spots developing on it - not acceptable on something we paid about £4k for, so we complained. Magnerts reaction was 'stainless steel doesn't rust'; then 'you must have rusty water', then 'clean it with Shiny Sinks or Astonish.' Only after I took advice from local trading standards did I get any kind of real response from then, and, three site visits and three recorded delivery letters later, a very nice man came from Dupont (the suppliers suppliers) to take more photographs. He has cleaned it, using bar-keepers friend, the marks have come off for now at least, but in my opinion, it's not something I'd expect to have to deal with, and I'm wondering how good that part of it will look three years from now. They know that's my view, and we have found out that they've had this problem of apparent rust stains in a few other cases too. They're admitting to three other instances but say: 'It's not rust, its stains,' and try to blame hard water, tea, coffee etc etc. They insist that cleaning will deal with it. I hope it does, because if it doesn't they'll be hearing from me again.

Have a chat with Alan at Bespoke Surfaces (if it's geographically relevant):-

    http://bespokesurfaces.co.uk/default.aspx

I have no affilliation with him other than he's one of my customers and buys Granite from me...He also does all the major man made countertops as mentioned above (none of which I sell).

You'll get sensible independent advice from him.

And say Alan from A.T. Stone recommended him...always nice to get a recommendation.

I cannot comment on John Lewis price for Corian, but I can for their Amtico flooring and carpets. I found them to be very competitive. We has a local fitter quote for Amtico and their quote was at least 15% more than JL from memory. Recently had them quote for carpet and came in at a good price too (yet to get carpet fitted!)

I sometimes wonder if some local suppliers add a 'posh person' surcharge for slightly more upmarket and less mainstream products. It would be worth just getting a quote from JL because although you may find it cheaper, the JL quote will most likely be reasonably fair and transparent.

I want Corian worktops when I eventually do my kitchen. (prob about 3 years away!)
  • mary jane01 - i would have to disagree with you about the price of amtico in john lewis. I got amtico in my hall just before christmas and john lewis wanted £58 a square metre for it, without fitting!! I bought mine online and paid £37 a square metre delivered to my door including the vat. £21 a square metre cheaper. Im hoping to find than corian is also cheaper online if john lewis amtico prices are anything to go by. I used www.pearsonfloorings.co.uk if anyone wants to know where i went they were excellent.

Anyway back to the Corian - ill have alook at that website now thanks alan m
  • Hi All

Sorry to revive an old thread...

Just wandering whether you went with Corian?

I've been looking at something called "Maia" for our worktops but I'm a little confused, is this like Corian?
