Sorry but another ceiling light question

Hi everyone hope soemone can help me with this problem I am having. Ok I am replaceing a bog standard ceiling light fixture when i pulled the old one away I saw 3 wires connected as thus.

i) 1 red wire connected to an area marked loop

ii) 1. Light blue wire connected to an area called neutral

iii) 1. Black wire connected to the earth section.

When I looked at my new hoist it showed a live section, a loop section and a neutral section and slightly away from these 3 sections which was single all be it a larger insulator screw earth setting.

So I connected my old wires coming out of the ceiling to the new hoist thus,

i) red wire to one of the 3 loops sockets

ii) light blue wire to one of the neutral sockets

iii) black wire to the earth.

Before I Switched the light on I called my mate who is an electrician and ran by what I did he said that the black would be the black wire that is connected to the light switch so it should be connected to one of the live sockets and he couldnt fathom why it was connected to the earth on the old fitting.

Ok so I tidied all the wires and fittings up and switched power back on flicked my switch and hey presto nothing!!!!

SO I then rewired the black wire back to the earth and still no light coming on .

What am I doing wrong people any ideas because I have checked all the wires and they are fully in and clamped down.

many thanks for all your replys

The wire colours do not match any standards that I know of. I would guess that you have a live, a switched live and a neutral but no earth. To sort it out you will need a test meter and some knowledge. Alternatively, an electrician will save a lot of trouble and possibly pain.

Not a safe guess, and potentially you have wired your earth to a live wire or neutral.
Get your mate to have a look at it, he can sort it out quickly if he has seen it. Internet advice for wiring can only ever be a best guess, and never safe.

There is no way that you should be mucking about with this set up. As Phil-L says, these wiring colours do not match any colours that electricians in this country would easily recognise.
Probably a silly question, but are you in the UK? If you have a mate who is an electrician, why do you not get him to have a look. I am sure that the problem could easily be sorted out by someone with a meter and some knowledge of electrical wiring.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Like i said there was no earth coloured wire as such (i.e green and yellow or brown but the single black wire was connected to the earth on the old hoist. I have tried connecting this same wire to the earth and also taking my mates advice (black wire being the switch wire thus live and connecting it thus)

Not good if you connect brown to earth.

Sorry meant to say black connected to live , blue connected to neutral and red connected to loop

then tried black to earth blue to neutral and red to to loop

The black wire could well be a switched live, so by connecting it to the earth terminal on the new light fitting will make the metal parts of the fitting live - so risk of electrocution - when the switch is on.

The lighting circuit will need rewiring if there is no earth wire.

I would strongly advise to switch the lighting circuit circuit breaker off and call an electrician before you electrocute yourself.
