Problem with AD Aware Updates

we recently had installed a zoom 6 wireless router, but one of the kids pcs which runs on ME is now causing us a problem connecting to the ad-aware updates, tried re-installing ad-aware, but same error occurs.
Also tried spybot programme but again can't get their updates, error message reads 'socket error #10060'.
We have AVG and this successfully updates.
Anyone can help?

    Hi there,

I know it's not really a solution but a workaround could be to download the definitions manually for Adaware here -

    http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/defs.zip

    Otherwise you could:-

To delete the defs.ref file from

    Default: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware

    and then open Ad-aware,

If you wish not to delete it, you could rename the file:

    defs.ref.old or something else...

    Cheers

  • Hi,

I am not familiar using routers. If you have to change the internet settings (in the internet explorer) to browse internet, then please read forward.

It looks like the default internet connection details for both Ad-Aware and Spybot has to be changed.

    1) For Ad-Aware, please click on "Check for updates now" and then "Configure".

    2) For Spybot, it is a bit hidden.
    a) Click on Mode menu and then select Advanced
    b) Then click Settings and under that Settings
    c) When you scroll down (in the right section) you should be able to see
"Web update" and under that 'use proxy to connect to update server'

If it helps, I had a version of Ad-Aware and I noticed over time that it stopped downloading the updates every time I checked. It would just say nothing available. I then removed the version I had, went to the Lavasoft website and downloaded the latest version of Ad-aware and installed it. All of a sudden, all the updates started again. Not sure but it seems that the downloads of the updates may be linked to the version number. The lower the number, the less regular updates you get.
  • Stu,
Not too certain what I need to do with the downloaded defs zip file, saved to file at present.

    Thx
    Rich.

    Roadsidetree,

Using Mozilla Firefox as browser, do you know how i can find the settings?
    Thx
    Rich

    Randal,
    New version downloaded yesterday.

    Thx Rich

    Hi,

Once you have the defs.ref file saved onto your PC, usually it is downloaded in a zip file, you should double click the zip file then select 'extract' and extract the defs.ref to where your old defs.ref is saved, usually C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal

You will be prompted about whether you want to replace the old defs.ref with the new one, you should say yes to this.

Now when you start adaware you should see the definitions file has a date much newer then previously.

Let me know if you have any more probs.

    Cheers
    Stu

Sounds like you have a firewall blocking the Spybot update.

see here where ZA was blocking the update. Maybe your router needs configuring to allow this.

    ;)
