my advice would be to contact the depatment of works and pensions via the jobcentre or http://www.jobcentrepluse.gov.uk for the number, then they will tell your friend either way

AFAIK she will not be able to claim her State pension until she is 60, but more than likely can claim any occupational pensions she may have.

Another woman at work has told her she can claim off her dead husbands national insurance contributions and they allow this because it keeps the unemployment figures down

Still cant do that till she is 60 i'm afraid.
Whether she claims from her husbands or in her own right will have to be decided nearer the time.
If she has paid full stamp for x number of years she will be able to claim a full pension in her own right (sorry dont know the exact number but i think it is about 30) if she has only ever paid married womens stamp or less than half of her full stamp years she can claim 60% pension from her husbands contributions.
Tell her she could write for a pension forecast to see what she can claim in her own right at 60.

or she can do it online.

At the moment she is unemployed until she is 60

As anniehanlon says, whatever someone at work has told her, she can't claim any State Pension, whether from her own contributions or her husband's until she is 60. If she has no other income she will have to register as unemployed until then.

    seven day wonder is correct.

    WHO??:rotfl:

anniehanlon, the amount of NI contributions for a full State Pension is 39 years for someone like the lady mentioned whose State retirement date is before April 6th 2010, anyone who reaches retiement age after that it is 30 years, although the age they can take the State Pension increases gradually until it is 65.

    Hope this helps.
