Contract not changed

I was taken on by my previous company as a QC assistant. I worked in that role for approximately 12 months and was then told I was needed as an inspector within the same department. My contract was never changed and I have recently been made redundant as an inspector. I was given the opportunity to apply for the job I had previously worked as and for which my contract of employment states is my job but I didn't get it. The post of assistant has now been filled by someone else.
My question is does it matter what it says on my COE or, by law, should the company have changed it to reflect the job I have done (inspector) for the last 9 years. Should they have offered me the job of assistant and do I have a claim on that position?

do you have anything in writing that states that you are employed as an inspector?
i ask as i am in a similar position - i have a 1 line email from 12/12/08 that states that my job title jad changed and i was a bdm rather than an assistant bdm. as i have been doing the job implied contract terms are in force and as such i argued and have had confirmed that i am entitled to the priviledges that the other bdm's have
i think that i read that if you have been doing the job for 3 months or more then implied contract terms come in to force0 -
I don't have anything in writing to suggest that I was employed as an inspector. I think my situation differs in that QC assistant is a completely different job to QC inspector. Similar to a secretary and their boss. I really need to know if this is worth pursuing further.0
