The problem is I can't believe a word anyone in this Government says now.
We've had too many stage managed statements, leaks and seemingly of the cuff comments that have subsequently been proven to be cynically motivated for various political reasons.
I can't help thinking of them all as being collectively deceitful.

Its going to be interesting when the embargo on cabinet minutes comes off in 30 (or is it 40) years time to see who was actually pulling the strings on key decisions - like for example the VAT cut.

This is just an attempt to win back voters by trying to appear humble, instead of the usual arrogant spouting that it is all because of the US sub-prime market. So now it's all of our faults, when in reality the government could have acted to stop 100% plus LTV loans, 5x salary loans, and credit cards being dished out to those who had no chance of ever paying them off.

Instead, it suited the government to let the easy credit tidal wave carry on because it kept the feel-good factor going. We can all feel rich because we have the big telly, the holidays, the new car, and our 2 bed terrace is worth £200k. It was bound to end in tears, sub-prime or not.

Oh, and Balls wants to be Prime Minister some day so that's why he's saying it. I expect Milliband will be coming out with something similar very soon.

Milliband, is he the one who went running to the Americans begging them to stamp their feet about release of info on rendition and torture? Makes you wonder who it would have implicated...

Of course by the time he's up for the role it could have been renamed. Waterboarder in chief, maybe.

I know this sounds naff, but the husband of a former work colleague used to work closely with Darling.

Apparently, he is a very nice guy. (Unlike some Ministers she mentioned)!

You're right. He is a nice guy. I worked in DfT at the time that he was Secretary of State and I can confirm that he was well regarded by fellow civil servants. Trust me, civil servants get to see the real face of politicians and it's sometimes far from pretty and very different from the face they present to the public.

Don't hold your breath for any similar acknowledgement or apology from Brown. He seems quite incapable of recognising or apologising for the role he has played in the current crisis.

He says all of us (thats me and you too) should have some humility over how we have acted over the past decade.

Grr that's far too cheeky! I haven't run up any debts (apart from student loan), I've been carful with my money, saved hard to get a deposit together, and refused to pay a hugely inflated price for a house with a ridiculously high LTV mortgage!

I'm quite adamant that the situation is not of my making but I'm still suffering. And he has the cheek to say we should all be sorry. The git.
I am not really an Eskimo. I can hear what you're thinking... "Inuit!"

Like Blair with Iraq. His words, IIRC, were 'Britain has nothing to be ashamed of in relation to our actions in Iraq.' No, Britain doesn't, YOU do, you ****!

Brown and Darling are very different.

If you work for Brown, it is a good idea to wear ear protection, according to my sources.
