Kaupthing Edge/ing Accounts Witheld Interest

Has anybody else had our problem?
We closed our KAUPTHING EDGE account and withdrew the money before the bank crashed. We have just been notified by ING who 'opened an account for us without authorisation or permission' that we have interest from KAUPTHING.
They are refusing to return the interest unless we activate their account and retreive it that way.
Yes i know that is a simple solution, but it has to be bourne in mind that activating the account registers on your credit file and it is not good to shown lots of opened and quickly closed accounts on this file.
Anybody know if what ING are doing is 'legitimate'? - that is both opening an account without authorisation and retaining the interest unless it is opened.
Might also be worth anyone else who had KAUPTHING checking their status!

If they have opened the account surely it would already show on your credit file( if its going to) because the security/identity checks are done when setting up the account.
I would activate the account, withdraw the money but just leave the account open & dormant.0 -

From here:The following things are NOT listed on your report:
Savings Accounts. As savings are not a credit product they don’t appear on credit files.
I'd just do as they ask to save yourself the hassle.0
