I agree M&S shouldn't be selling chickens that are 'rotten', but you also mentioned a 'fairly big shop' - was there not something else to have for dinner??

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.

It might not have been rotten - sometimes, chicken that's packed in clingfilm smells really awful when it's first opened, but the smell goes after a few minutes, or if you wash the meat under the tap.

No this was rank rotten. I had to keep the window of the car open & the girl doing the form had to get a man down to read the barcode, it was so bad. She couldn't even open the bag.

I keep in the fridge what I'm having Sat, Sun & Mon. I freeze what I'm having Tue, Wed, Thu & Fri. So no, at 5pm there was no time to defrost anything.

Also to add, a big (£££) shop in M&S does not get you a whole weeks food anyway, but thats another story:rolleyes:

Also, as I've said, it was so bad, I wanted to return it to them. Once I had broken the clingfilm putting it back in the fridge was not an option, it was stinking to high heaven:eek:

    So,you bought a rotten chicken,who hasn't..

Actually I think you pay a premium to shop in M&S & I think its reasonable to expect (at their prices) fresh quality food. They do charge more for it, if not an added quality what is the extra charge for?
After all its not just food, its M&S food:rolleyes:

They were prepared to take you word for it,but it looks like there has been some confusion (or lies).
Just find out the Managers name and ask to speak to her,do this by phone to avoid any more time wasting.

They don't need to take my word for it, that I was told I could take it to YYYYY that evening. The girl from XXXXX told me they tape calls, so its easily proved.

On account of me being ran around the place (much more than I needed to be) then I think they are well obliged to pay my petrol.
I couldn't sort the £5 out there & then in the shop, I couldn't hang on any longer, as I've said I had plans that evening, what should have been a quick trip turned into a mission (through misleading info from a customer helpline) & I had already hung about filling in the food form & I couldn't wait any longer.

If you mean they were prepared to take my word for it the chicken was rotten, they didn't need to, they couldn't open the bag & it was within the sell by date.

Just because you pay a premium, doesn't mean occasionally, one chicken is going to be left out of refridgeration for too long by a poor member of staff.!!!! happens.

Many stores would have insisted you bring the whole thing back to get a refund, they didn't ,which has to say something good about them.

Well I really don't think I'm being out of order insisting on £5 for a 30 mile trip I had to take because they sold rotten food.

I emailed last night & I received an automated response today, saying its in a queue to be dealt with.

"Most" stores would have got their hours of trading correct.

Did you email chairman@marks-and-spencer.com? I did when they screwed up the order for our wedding cake, and I got nowhere with the store or the 'customer services' phoneline - even thought they admitted the screw up was entirely their fault. I did eventually get a resolution (and a cake!) but nothing for my time or trouble.
