Best Wireless Router.

I'm on the market for a wireless router. It doesn't have to have the new N draft spec because I dont currently have any computers that can take advantage of it, though I wont mind if it does.

At the minute I'm currently with Virgin but am thinking of moving else where, I'm not sure if you can get routers that are compatible with both cable and ADSL/ADSL2 etc.

Any one recommend any reliable routers, my old one met its demise at the wrong end of a lump hammer because it was rubbish.

Cheers.

What do you want it for, internet access or shifting data around the home network?

Home network and internet, so file sharing printer sharing network storage and it'll be connected to the internet.

Get somthing you can put tomato on. Failing that, dd-wrt. Really so much better than manufacturer firmware.

That changes things. You need one with a ADSL modem built in too, I've only ever had Virgin but the same logic applies to your selection.

If you want to move *lots* of data around HD Video really, then you need the fastest you can. As N isn't ratified yet stick to the same makers kit in all your hardware (or at least the ones that you need the fast transfer between), printing and internet use won't be much of a strain.

The comments about DDT and Tomato are fine but at the end of the day until N is ratified theres no standard between manufacturers that is consistant. Manufacturers have been known to tweakl the spec=k to get the best out of it until it's ratified and so open nsource isn't really appropriate until N is settled. If you buying a new router theres usually not a lot in the open source firmware thats really worth you losing your warranty too quickly.

You may find the best one is the one in the shop that has the N router and a Dongle in a "starter" pack at a special price. It's sometimes cheaper to buy the starter kit than the router by itself.

Cheers guys I bought a Linksys last night that had some good reviews every where I went. Its N draft but it'll still do for my hardware, hoping its kinda future proofing my network.

Hopefully Virgin will offer a real good deal to get me to stay with them, who knows.

Simply tell them your not happy with the current price and your going to move elsewhere.

With me they were charging 35 quid, then it jumped to 47 (!) so I phoned them and told them to cancel and they can take the lot back. Then they said I can have all the same package for 27 quid!! (Which is REALLY annoying that theyre willing to knock 20 quid off 'just like that'. But also proves its worth being vigilant over.)

I've been doing it sice I've been with them. But they seem to offer the best deals to new customers, when I rang them up about it they basically implied I was better off being a new customer.

I might jump ship to sky, but the O2 BB is looking good. If I had an aerial on my house I'd go to O2 straight away.
