Hi
I am laying a gravel path at the minute, have dug a large trench and filled with 10mm pea gravel (bulk bag), I am now ready to topdress and the wife has decided she would like slate chippings the 40mm size, could anyone tell me how to work out how much I will need to order, the area needed to be covered is as below
10 linear meters long
50cm width
10cm depth
I know the 10cm is a little deep for economies sake but I suspect having it a little deeper than the 5cm norm would stop me having to replace it so frequently when the children get playing with it:rolleyes:
Thanks
Jim

A rough calculation (if I am right) would be about 0.5m3 so using something i spotted online says about half a "dumpy bag" or enough to cover about 13m2 . Cost wise my guess is around £100?0

The density of broken slate varies between 1290 and 1450 Kg/M cubed
Taking your volume to equal 0.5M cubed your total amount of slate to complete this area at a depth of 100mm would be between 645 and 725Kg. The bigger the slate the less the the weight as smaller slate will fill more gaps hence higher density.
Hope this helps :jSome people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!0 -
thanks, ended up buying a bulkbag just to make sure that I have had enough, was £115 delivered which isnt too bad...now just to get it laid0
