Can any one please recommend a reasonable a car rental company? I would like to hire a car from Los Angeles - San Francisco. Some want to charge an extra $75 because I'm not returing it to LA.
Thanks

The non return fee is pretty normal, I've never heard of anyone not getting collard for it tbh.
  • i use hertz and a couple of months ago i used them for one way rental within new york state and there was no charge for one way rental. i'm going to use them again in summer and again dropping off at different location again within new york state and there appears to be no charge for one way. i looked at hertz for you picking up in los angeles and dropping off in san fransisco and the price looked as if it wasn't expensive for a weeks car hire £174 for 7 days for a full size (ford taurus ) in august. they say that any one way charge has been accounted for within that price ( look at terms and conditions ) ...try putting in for 7 days car hire returning to the same airport and see the difference when you put in for a one way rental . it takes a bit of playing about with and then you need to compare it against other companies . as last time was the 1st time i'd done a one way rental it was a bit of a minefield ....i seem to remember some companies seemed vague about the one way rental charges ...i also use hertz because i get a discount through my company so it may not be right for you.
  • Be very wary of Dollar. Had car hire from LA airoprt to San Francisco airport as part of a package. When I got to San Francisco I found that I did not need the car-partly due to the cost of parking at San Francisco hotels. Took the car to a downtown Dollar branch in San Francisco to find out the situation. Was told that an employee needed a car to go to the airport so they would waive the drop off fee. Was given a final rental agreement showing clearly a $0.00 balance.

Two weeks after returning home I received a demand from a credit agency in The US for $160 dollars drop off fee. Naturally I questioned it and was advised that it was a mistake.

Sorry this was a negative response.

You've obviously never been to California then!

That state has a No One Way drop off fee at most agencies.

    Look at airline Network

I have done this twice with them and they usually beat others rates.

    One Way Rentals

A one way rental is any hire where the drop-off depot is different from where the vehicle was collected. One way rentals are available on a request and confirmation basis only, and will incur a "One Way Fee" based on the distance, in miles, between the two depots and not the distance driven during the hire. These fees are shown below.

Please Note - There is no fee for one way rentals within the states of Florida and California, or for one way rentals between the states of California, Arizona and Nevada.

california is so much easier than other states to get car rentals - it's much rarer to have to pay under 25 surcharges there (yay!).
i can't remember who i rented from (3 years ago and my memory is just too bad!) but i've used these people before and they were very cheap: http://www.usrentacar.co.uk/
