Wiring Problem?

Hi all,

I`m having a bit of a problem with a cat 5 cable...
I have installed a jack plug at the top of the wall for the xbox live (tv is on a bracket), and another jack plug at the bottom of the wall for the pc, the problem I have, is the one at the bottom works but the top one does`nt (no connection), now I will explain what I have done....
I have used the same cable and cut off the outer sleeve and pressed the wires into the jack with the push tool, and then carried on to the jack at the bottom.
I thought this would work ok, any info would be welcome.
Thanks.

This will not work. You will need to run a second cable from your router so you have one each for your pc and xbox. Alternatively buy a cheap 4 port hub/switch, connect the cable from your router to it and then run 2 separate cables from the hub to your pc and xbox.

Perhaps a picture will help matters.

Either setup 1 or 2 will work fine. Your setup will not as you cannot split cat5 cable. Only point to point links are allowed.

The fact that your PC is working is more luck that anything.

Can you explain what you mean by a jack plug? Do you mean an RJ45 plug? I don't think so, because it would be very difficult wire "through" an RJ45 plug.

Perhaps you mean an RJ45 socket? It would be easier to wire "through" one of these to another socket, but that is not how 10BaseT and related standards are meant to work - it is intended to be used as a star network, not a bus.

You need to run two seperate cables and not to piggy back of the first one its not like running a spur on a mains circuit.
