£200 for a wedding gift?? If you don't have it you can't give it. And if you did have a 'spare' £200, I'm betting there's bills or other far more important stuff to spend it on. Why don't you try and compromise and go for £100 (which is still a lot btw)

I would feel awful if a member of my family gave me that as a wedding present when I knew they couldn't afford it. If anything, closer family members should understand the other member's situation and expect even less.

As for the other wedding - £50 is more than reasonable to spend on a gift. Slightly less than that would still be considered reasonable tbh.

Well in arrived the first invite today, Its for the entire day at a posh hotel, so a £20 gift isn't going to cut the mustard when meals alone are at least £25 per person, So thats £50 just to cover meals let alone the gift, And to make matters worse, the mrs ordered a club book, I said whats that for "Oh I'll need something to wear" So at the min we have fell out, She is all excited about going, We can't afford to go and even if could I don't want to as I hate weddings with a passion. So what do we do? Its a friends wedding, its probably the only one we could get out off, but then what do you say to them?

I know everyone on here seems shocked about £200 for a gift but if NI is anything like here in Republic of Ireland that would be seen as fairly standard. I'm on an irish weding forum and standard gift for friends would be €200 and for family anything between €300 and €500. Giving actual gifts would be fairly unusual. Makes for pretty expensive weddings!!!
