Cheque Deposit via ATM

Is it possible to deposit a cheque via an ATM, and if so, does the ATM have to be one directly associated with your Bank?
It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!

Some ATMs in some bank branches allow this (HSBC that I am aware of). Not sure whether you have to have an account with them or not.

I'd assume the same rules apply to walking into a bank with a cheque, you can only pay into your account through a branch of your own bank.

You can deposit cash and / or cheques through many of Lloyds TSB ATMs too, but you need an account with them and the cheque will be credited to the account related to the card you use at the ATM when paying in the cheque / cash. The LTSB ATMs with a 'Cash & Dash' sign on them only offer limited services, so you can't deposit things through them, but you can through most other Lloyds TSB ATMs. The cheque will appear on your account instantly, but will not begin to clear until the next working day, when the branch staff have had a chance to verify your deposit. Same with cash deposits. On problem I've found though is that the branch staff often forget to restock the ATMs with deposit envelopes, which can be pretty frustrating.

paying cash or cheques into an ATM is exactly the same as doing it with a cashier except that it's going to get processed later rather than right now.

As far as it goes, cheques are generally OK but cash really isn't recommended unless you're using a machine that knows exactly how much you've fed it and tells you.

Most Santander ATMs allow cash and cheque deposits.

Former A&L branches usually have an electronic/ non-envelope system (where the cash or cheque is fed directly into the machine and counted/ scanned) where as others are still using envelope system - electronic is being rolled out across the network.

Cash is credited instantly, however as said with cheques they are all removed, verified, and deposited by branch staff at the end of each working day.

Many years ago Abbey National Building Society used to offer this facility, but only for deposit to their own accounts, not sure if Abbey still do (now part of Santander I think)
