Faulty Radiator from Homebase. Return to store? Pay for refitting?

Hi there,

A very large vertical radiator that we bought from Homebase last July has developed a really nasty rust patch where you bleed it. We only spotted it lately.

It's on a clean system and we have anti-corrosive additives in it so I think it is a problem with the rad itself. I have the original till receipt.

Homebase HQ are saying I will need to deal with the store I bought it from and that they can't help me directly. The trouble is as most stores were out of stock when we bought it we needed to buy it from a store 60 miles away. :(

My questions are...

a) Can they really decline to help me unless I travel to the actual store I bought it from?

b) If they agree to replace it (and I can't see why they couldn't) are they obliged to pay for the refitting. It would seem unjust if I have to pay a plumber to drain down my system, replace the rad, refill and test when it's their fault?

What do you guys think?

I have found their head office extremely helpful. Give them a call on 0845 0778888.

If they agree a replacement they are obliged to leave you in a position you were in before the problem occurred, that is to say they are responsible for fitting the new radiator.

    Regards,
    Art.

Thanks for that, I had previously tried emailing their head office (and it was them that said I'd need to go to the store 60 miles away). I'll try calling them.

And thanks for clarifying the other thing, that what would seem just isn't it.

They'll just give you another radiator, they won't pay for the labour.

  • Dear Temrael,

I just found your post after doing a Google search. The very same problem has happened to me, which I noticed over the weekend. I emailed Homebase and they replied telling me to take the radiator back to the store I bought it from for a refund or replacment. Easier said than done as:

    1) the raidiator is plumbed in and I'll have to pay to have it removed
    2) it won't fit in the back of my car
    3) it's getting cold and I don't want to be without a radiator waiting for a replacement (i had to wait a few weeks when I orginally ordered the thing!)

I just wondered how your situation was resolved in the end....

    Thank you
