Credit Scoring for Bank Accounts

Help! I need advice.

I have a poor credit score, and my 18 year old daughter went to upgrade her bank account which she has had for 6 years to one with a debit card.

As she has no credit history, apart from her account with them, they searched the address and said that as I am the only adult living there with her, and I have a poor credit history, they cannot give her a debit card as she is a bad risk.

I have four accounts with this organisation, who shall remain nameless at the moment, one of which has my wages every month, and two of which are savings accounts.

Can they do this? I thought credit searches were against the name, not the address.

She is 18 with no credit history..... surely thats the reason she didn't get upgraded? Go elsewhere, HSBC have Visa debit cards, Lloyds too.

Since she has no credit history, try a basic bank account. Refer to the following link: http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf

Alternatively, open another bank account at another bank. Try to look for one that accepts teenagers since you are still 18's. Some banks accounts are tailored to 11-18 year olds, and some banks offer debit cards with them too. See their webstie for more details.

I thought when a customer turns 18, the bank will automatically upgrade the bank account to an account that is for 18 years old or over?:huh:
  • Thanks for your replies, that's really helpful. The bit that's really nagging at me is they used my details to assess her suitability - under the data protection act can they use me to judge her suitability? As she's 18, she's legally an adult, but she cannot give permission to search my details....

Any views? It's just that they're ringing me later to explain why they did it and I want some good responses!!!!!

    Thanks..........

    You're welcome.

Try opening a 'teenagers account' first. If that still fails, try the basic bank account.

When your daughter opens a bank account, I don't think your details need to be involved actually. Hopefully, the response from the bank will be good.
