you could get the problem that people will sense an opportunity and over price as they see you really wanting to live in that area? Worth a go though !
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I was thinking about leafletting houses in the area, asking anyone if they're interested in selling to us. Has anyone tried this, and did it work?

Hi, just wanted to say GO FOR IT!! I can recommend the leaflet idea as this is how I managed to find my last place - that was in NW London. I typed out a letter, said I really liked the area and that I was a private individual and that the property would become my home (all true). What I didn't mention was that I had a property to sell.

I know I struck lucky as I had only leafleted two streets before I got a response and I liked that property enough to buy it. I had printed mountains of leaflets ready to do lots of streets.

TBH I got the idea from a friend of a friend who had also used this method of finding her next home. In my experience in London the estate agents had great difficulty in understanding that my upper price limit was just that...they kept suggesting places that were out of my price range and advising me to "make an offer". I think they were just trying to prove to the sellers that they were doing something, knowing full well the vendors weren't open to offers as prices were on the way up at the time. Cut out the middle man and find the vendors yourself.

As other posters have mentioned...what have you got to lose other than some paper and a bit of shoe leather?

Good luck, hope it works out for you.
