The internet has affected our daily lives beyond comprehension in the last 13 years, the only real surprise to me is that it's taken so long. I would imagine, going forward EA's will be under increasing pressure from people wanting to sell houses themselves. They haven't helped their cause over the years by charging fees that don't bare any correlation to the work done. Another nail in the coffin for a beleaguered industry.

Why does an apparently successful couple who have bought and sold property before, need to be told to declutter and redecorate by an expert?

How many houses have you viewed? Over the years we have viewed a lot and had our own homes viewed by loads of people.

What you say is just common sense - people shouldn't need to be told to declutter and keep their houses tidy when they are up for sale. You would be surprised how many people put houses that are absolute tips up for sale.

What is one person's idea of clutter is another person's idea of "lived in".

Personally, clutter and mess in houses we have viewed doesn't bother me, our current house was a bit of mess when we viewed it but it didn't put us off - the house was exactly what we were looking for.

Clutter wouldn't bother me in the least...but it seems it does worry lots of people...which always slightly surprises me.

PN, I've turned on the tv and frankly I don't know ow you can stand compiling your database of tv property programmes. This one stinks.


Also: the kids in the attic...is there some rule about that? Both ceiling height and p[lanning for chang of use of the room?

What I'm saying is this is not some revolution in property programming. Telling someone to define rooms and do the gardening has been said thousands of time before in dozens of programmes. Must make for cheap TV.

I too am perplexed at those buyers who cannot see beyond clutter, untidiness etc, but that seems to be the market in which we are operating.

Clutter etc shouldn't necessarily lead to a lower value - but I accept that it can reduce "kerb appeal". With that, a property may take longer to sell and may then need a price reduction, which does lower the value.

I keep Sarah Beeney's views in mind ... in a rising market you can sell a tip of a shack and make a profit.

But this is not a rising market ......

I have got used to being perplexed why some people offer their home and can't be asred to tidy/clean up. God help any EA that tells them it could do with a clean/tidy up as is usually causes the seller to feel insulted.

On the other hand you can go to immaculately kept places and the seller will demand you tell them what to do to spruce the place up and there is nothing. Then the seller can think you are being patronising and so you are wrong again.

But I guess all EA's are usually wrong - nothing new

I have to admit that when I look at a property for sale, I take it for granted that I'm not buying their tat, dirt, rubbish or clutter

But as I said previously, the seller is overlooking kerb appeal by not having a clean and tidy house presented.

Some people are too arrogant to value an EAs opinion - some are simply too lazy/not motivated to take any notice of it

I used to wonder, after viewings, when people moaned about the pattern on the wallpaper in the lounge and such comments as to the reason why they would not be taking it further. Pathetic or timewasters or combination of both perhaps
