Remember the prices don't include sales tax, this is added on afterwards!!

If you go to the Customer Services/Relations dept in Macys, they will issue overseas visitors with a discount card for 11% off all purchases. You can use this again and again during your stay, and at various branches of Macys. I got mine in New York and it was still valid the next year when I went to Florida (is also valid at a chain called Burdines in some states).

For cheap branded and designer stuff there is a store called Century 21 which is opposite Ground Zero. It's a huge place which sells surplus stock from various designers - like a bigger version of TK Maxx. Its pot luck as to whether there is anything you like in your size, but well worth a look.

Try and check out Woodbury Common you get savings of up to 60% off on all of your designer stuff. You will need to take a bus it takes about an hour to get there. But well woth a visit.

If you have time to spare and it's clothing/shoes/trainers you're after, then take a trip to neighbouring New Jersey where all the above articles are exempt from tax which can save up up to 17%.

Try the Garden State Plaza at Paramus - Approx 300 stores + Macy's and other large department stores - it's one of the 10 biggest in the USA - or a stones throw from Newark Airport is the Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall. Take your passport with you and ask at reception for the discount coupon book which will save you $100's.

2nd vote for the Macy's discount card. I did very well with it last month :D

Daffy's is another TK Maxx type place, I got a lovely Tommy Hilfiger handbag for about £11; good for Calvin Klein underwear, Ralph Lauren shoes etc but you have to have a good rummage. The one I went to is at 462 Broadway, but there are more. Check out https://www.daffys.com

Pier 17 South street seaport is nice, a bit less manic than 5th ave or Broadway. There's an Abercrombie, Gap, Talbots, J Crew & Anne Taylor off the top of my head.

In general I found prices to be about the same in dollars as they are in pounds over here, ie if it costs £70 here, it'll be $70 over there. Of course this doesn't apply to everything.
  • What worth buying in New York?
Have you been to the Woodbury Common Outlet?

    Thanks

  • remember your customs limits as well . some stuff is blatantly obvious that you've bought it there eg computer software , presents. whereas clothes etc aren't so obvious . i find that i don't like to travel back with all the labels attached to my garments . i personally think it's a lot of hassle bringing back my credit card receipts and shop receipts for ALL of my items so i destroy them in the US. some i know like to keep these to check off on the credit card bill and to be sure they have them they post them back from the US to their home address.
