How important is a Video??

It all depends on whether you think you'll watch it. Do you like being in front of the camera?

My fiance and I don't so we're having a video booth instead. People can record their own personal message on there to the bride and groom. It seems so much more fun and something I'd watch back. Plus, it saves on those (awful) guest message books which I'd never look at again either.

When my OH and I went to see the Superintendant Registrar for our final meeting, he insisted that we video the ceremony at least (he was a super, daddy-like chap who I thought was wonderful!).

He said that even if we don't watch it for the next 5-10 years, it's better to have one and not watch it than to not have it and regret it for the next 50 years. Which is my philosophy on life in general, so who am I to argue?

We're not having a videographer though - we can't afford it - we're having a camcorder on a tripod for the ceremony and then we'll get the teenagers to do a 'documentary'/voxpop thingy for the day and evening.

We decided at the last minute to book a videographer and I am so glad we did. It cost less than £500 for him to film the lovely hubby and co getting ready at our venue, guests arriving, the ceremony, guests mingling, photo's being taken and the speeches. He came back for an hour in the evening to film the first dance and he also filmed some of our guests giving us personal messages. It's fantastic and I wouldn't be without it.

We didn't have one (nearly) 3 years ago and I don't regret it at all. We have the photos to remind us.

i wasn't particularly bothered about having one, but we were lucky that a friend of our photographer wanted to build up his business so offered to do ours for free, it's really quite good and we got lots of copies so they've been usefull for sending out. I still think that if we had to pay for one then it wouldn't have been high on my agenda

We didn;t have one even though we could have one for free! I didn;t want one and we didn;t miss it - although I was pleased a friend recorded our vows on her mobile but I don;t even have a copy of that. our first dance was filmed by a mate but we've never seen the video and we got married last June.

I don;t think it's that important, but then I haven;t had a single photo printed yet either so maybe it's just me! :)

  • I really really wnat one but its a £500 I cant justify (or even find!). OHs brother has said he will film the ceromony and some bits on the day but would really love a proper one to look back on

  • I was thinking about asking friends and family to take videos on their phones / digital cameras. I also have a digital camcorder that is not bad quality (only any use in daylight though) and might see if I can get a friend to take some videos with that.

I thought this way I could get footage of the whole day right to the end and would get lots of different angles / perspectives.

My idea is that I would then send footage to a professional editor to make up the actual video. That way I would not have to pay for the filming but could still get a reasonably good result.

However, I am not sure how much it would cost to get it edited and whether or not it would save enough money to make it worth what would be a substantial drop in filming quality. Does anyone know how much it would cost for professional editing or even if anyone would offer this service?

Do you have a college near you that does practical film/media courses? I know friends who couldn't afford a professional photographer and have advertised at our local arts college with great results. Any keen student should have a showreel thingy they could show you.

I'd go for video over professional photo's. if you ask guests to take plenty fo shots you will have lots of photo's of the day bu I have to say being able to actually see and hear the wedding all over again is lovely.
I wouldn't suggest getting people to do one on camera's etc the editing can be pricey, asking around for media students is your best bet as Hermia suggested.
    good luck
