Car insurance renewal vs new customer policy

My car insurance is due for renewal this week. Is there anything to stop me from getting a policy from my current insurer as a new customer, rather than accepting my renewal quote? My current insurer was by far the cheapest on the comparison sites, but my renewal quote was almost twice the price . I just wanted to check, because I don't want to end up being unable to claim on the policy because of not actually being a new customer.
Thanks for your help. (Sorry if other people have posted this question before, but I didn't know what to search under.)
