I wanna a Dyson DC07 vacuum cleaner!

  • Decided to try Dyson before buying a new machine.

Don't phone the 0870 number - either 01666 827200 or 01666 827272 takes you through to Customer Services!

As Poppycat says, they charge a one-off £55.00 for an engineer to call and this covers all parts, labour, etc. no matter what the problem is and even if it is no longer under any guarantees.

The only thing that isn't included is if there's something wrong with one of the three little attachments. I do remember these vaguely - think they were for hoovering curtains or something. Also if there's a problem with the filters that isn't included.

I'm pretty sure mine needs a new motor which is covered. Not bad for £55.00!

Having read the problems that a lot of people have had with their Dysons, I imagine that's why their customer service department has to be so good! It does go to show how cheap they must be to make, if any problem can be fixed for £55.00 or less!
  • Tested the vacuum as above for normal vacuuming and using the hose.

The "sook" was so strong it pulled a thread on the mat by the front door, the thread wrapped so tightly round one the brushes that it stopped working and a smell of burning started along with a puff of smoke!

Cut away the offending thread and all was well again, it was like using my Dyson for the first time again when I saw the before and after bits of the hall carpet.

The cable is very long, in some ways too long as it gets in the way, the release of the dust bin is easier than the Dyson, comes with spare filter and band and an extra little dust bin attatchment for vacuuming animal hair. I haven't tried this attatchment yet but with three cats it should come in useful.

All in all I am pleased with it particularly as my Dyson was one of the original (doesn't owe me any money, thats for sure) and it didn't have a different level facility for hard floors.

Freecycle will get the old Dyson and hopefully someone can tart it up again.

  • Do Tesco need a Typhoon to 'clean up their act' with vacuum cleaner sales and their 'Deal of the Day'?

Tesco had the Typhoon VC-9390 (1900w) vacuum cleaner on 'Deal of the Day' offering a 'saving' of £20 down to £49.99. This model seems to be discontinued and the Typhoon VC-9390 (2000w) upgraded current model is today offered by Tesco at a normal price of £49.99.

So you could have ignored 'Deal of the Day' waited and got the better model, not a discontinued line, and for no more. Tesco didn't tell you that the 1900 was to be discontinued and you can bet the plan was for the 2000 model to sell for the £49.99 price once they'd 'sucked in' customers to shift the old stock from their warehouse (otherwise they'd have to sell it cheaper)!

Of course, there's 14 days from the time you received it to change your mind and get Tesco to collect it and refund or replace with the current model.

But you might be happy with it. It's cheaper than a Dyson; similar technology. But wouldn't it have been more money saving friendly of Tesco to tell customers that they're discontinuing a product and to offer it at a 'real' saving?

I know this isn't the cheapest option or considered the best choice ~ I read and re-read all the threads about Dysons and all the various other vacuum brands that were recommended.

I had an old DC04 which had fallen down the stairs a couple of times  and finally gave up the ghost last week when another bit fell off and it wouldn't stand up!

I finally decided to go for a new Dyson and after saving quite a bit on a new bed (using all the tips from here!) I figured I had a little more to spend.

In the end we got a DC15 for £219 from Argos ~ I reserved it online and got £100 off the catalogue price of £319.00. So maybe not the cheapest but a good deal and so far its been brilliant and I am very happy with it :D

Somerfield have the DC07 for £99.99. This is quite an old offer so you might need to phone around. I assume KwikSave might also have them.

Somerfield Paisley had plenty on Saturday.
  • Just a v. quick update as I'm sure people have better things to do than read about my vacuum cleaner (almost called it a hoover there!)

Bloke from Dyson has been and mended my 7 year old DC04. It needed a new clutch (not a motor and he wasn't interested in changing that too despite ample encouragement!) He did replace the sucky up tube that had split too. Not bad, all in all, for £55.00. Clutch and tube guaranteed for two years and says as much on the receipt.

He said that the most important thing that you can do to prolong any Dyson's longevity is clean the filter (the spongy filter thing up the top - not the thing down the bottom!) You're meant to do it every three months he said. He supervised me washing it out with Fairy Liquid and it was pretty filthy!

He'd been an engineer with them for years and actually had the same machine as me as a freebie when he'd joined them. He said "any Dyson with a 4 in it" was the best. He said he'd only seen one DC14 to repair in the eighteen months or so since they'd been on the market.

I'm not sure how reliable his recommendations are but thought I'd pass it on. He wasn't that impressed with the DC07 (the cheapest one!) that I was originally going to replace my DC04 with...

Trust me your all mad Dyson's are not that good.

The brand to switch to is Sebo.

Unfortunately the latest 2000 model was actually a pricing error. It was advertised as £49.99 on the website but went into the basket at £74.99. I did call them to find out what the real price was and it seems the glitch is now fixed and the price is £74.99. :(

Hmm...Tesco customer service told me that they couldn't say how long they would have the latest model for at the £49.99 price. So they were of the opinion then that it wasn't a pricing error. Hey, you might have got it for free if you'd ordered it and it was a pricing error.

My view is that this Chinese cleaner that Tesco supply without any manufacturer's details is not worth buying at full retail of £74.99. I suspect that the price has been raised until Tesco get past the 14 day returns period when buyers tempted by 'Deal of the Day' can return the discontinued model and get a full refund.

Anyone interested in the latest model may get a better price by waiting. But personally I'd still want Tesco to provide spare filters for the lifetime of the product. Where's the long term product support coming from?
