Muzzy - Worth the money?

Hello,

I just wondered if anyone has used the Muzzy series with their children to help them learn a second language and if so what did you think of it? How old was your child and how quickly did they pick things up? Did you find you also learned the language too? Was it an easy thing to introduce?
I am asking this because I have always been awful at languages but apparently if you are exposed to a second language from an early age then you find it much easier to pick them up later on so I thought I would try to give my daughters a head start. Muzzy is so expensive, even on ebay, so I wanted to find out a bit more about other peoples experiences before I decide whether or not to take the plunge.
Thanks
Taliwllow

I bought the French version many years ago and my children loved it. It is a very well-made package, but is really over-priced. They did learn some of the songs phonetically, but I'm sure that it made no real impact on them long-term!

I don't know what is on the market at the moment, but I bet there is a cheaper alternative available nowadays.

    Taliwillow,
I can't help but I will follow with interest as I am keen for mine to learn French.

Our eldest (4) can do some plesantries (hello, goodbye, thankyou) count to 10 & say what she is called. I have a great book which has french words around various scenes & we look at this & say the word in french for her to repete.

I agree about the expense & would love to find out if it is worth it!

I bought my DD Dora the Explorer CD Roms that were just games, but on each disc there was a language section to learn Spanish.

She has used them since she was 3 and is now 6 and knows basic words, her numbers up to 10 and quite a few colours.
The two best things I have done with my life

Hi there I am French but my kids 1st language is English; I have Muzzy French that I bought in a charity shop; and I will agree with the others; Muzzy is too expensive and it is not that good; there is many other alternative that can do the same job for less such as Usborne ''First Fun With French DVD£7.99'' ''Bonjour les amis!'' there are 3 DVDs; you can get them on Amazon for £5; just go on amazon and search French dvd; there is a lot in there and they all cover the same topic as Muzzy...

    Hope it help...

Mussy teaches children no more than most parents can remember from their school days. So numbers one to ten, a few colours, their name and some simple phrases

it will not further their education in any way, as it isnt indepth enough, to put them higher than the basic levels they learn, once reaching secondary school

Lidl had some cute duvet covers this week. In either pink or blue, with everyday pictures and underneath the english names together with either german/french or spanish.
It promised they could learn a new language in their sleep...if only ;)

We have some of the Usborne books of first 1000 words (picture dictionary) which are backed up by their great websites, including pronunciations.

My parents bought Muzzy for my sister and I when we were about 4/5. We loved it! Didn't learn a lot though. Can still remeber some of the songs :) Maybe see if you can get a second hand version?

Is there still the woman saying 'Yes these children really are English' or something equally condescending? :rotfl: :rotfl:
