cashing in premium bonds

Hi, I want to cash in a fair amount of premium bonds. I have purchased them over a number of years in regular £100 blocks. I have obtained the form from the post office and now realise I need to post every single certificate they have sent me. This will require posting a large parcel, has anyone else ever done this and if so is there any way around this? What with the lousy return seems that purchasing in anything other than £5K blocks is a little pointless.
Seems a pretty poor process for selling, can't believe my holders number and the amount I want to cash in isnt enough info.

Do you need to send the bonds - I have done in the past, but a mate claimed he was paid out even though he only sent the form with the serial numbers (can't remember the wording on the forms - was some time ago).
In theory, they should be able to pay out without the bonds - after all, they know where to send to send the cash if you win so must be able to cancel them providing name, address, holder number etc match.0 -
Can't you just say you have lost them? (But of course you kept a note of the numbers).(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
