cashing in premium bonds

Hi, I want to cash in a fair amount of premium bonds. I have purchased them over a number of years in regular £100 blocks. I have obtained the form from the post office and now realise I need to post every single certificate they have sent me. This will require posting a large parcel, has anyone else ever done this and if so is there any way around this? What with the lousy return seems that purchasing in anything other than £5K blocks is a little pointless.

Seems a pretty poor process for selling, can't believe my holders number and the amount I want to cash in isnt enough info.

Do you need to send the bonds - I have done in the past, but a mate claimed he was paid out even though he only sent the form with the serial numbers (can't remember the wording on the forms - was some time ago).

In theory, they should be able to pay out without the bonds - after all, they know where to send to send the cash if you win so must be able to cancel them providing name, address, holder number etc match.

Can't you just say you have lost them? (But of course you kept a note of the numbers).

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
