Cleaning and sealing concrete after soiled with dog urine???

Ok, we have two lovely dogs but even though they go for walks regularly still like to wee on the concrete area just outside the back door. I don't think the concrete has been sealed as even though the area is cleaned regularly it still smells when i leave the door or back window open.

Usually i use bleach water and a broom to clean the area but have read that this is wrong. So then i heard that using white vinegar might do the trick. Does anyone know the process or has anyone experienced this and dealt with the problem succesfully?

Also i would like to seal the area as i didnt realise that concrete is porous and will soaf liquid up easily, does anyone know how, what to use and if possible all in a cost effective way?

Also would i need to use some sort of enzyme product to counteract the amonia in the urine:confused: ?

Thank you in advance....:T

  • The enzyme which dissolves the proteins (which create the smell) are found in biological washing powder.

Use a solution of bio washing powder in hot water and clean it with that, and it should solve the problem.
  • Really, that easy? - thank you i will be giving it a go tomorrow.

Any idea on sealing the area?

  • no idea about sealing it, other than with floor paint. I am sure if you google concrete sealant there will be several products?

Here is one - Wickes, but I expect other DIY stores will have similar - http://www.wickes.co.uk/Floor-Sealers/Concrete-Floor-Sealer/invt/600306

I guess the floor will need to be really very dry before you seal it, so maybe you will need wait till we get warmer weather so you can ensure it has really had chance to dry well.
  • Lol, thank you! I already knew they had sealers about just when you are the least handy diy person you sometimes think you might be missing a trick - i will prob get the tub and be scratching my head for a bit - googling everything i'm unsure about (lol, which would prob be every two mins - it drives my family nuts).

Thank you for your help - you are a star! :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Just confirming above, the biological washng powder. In fact, sometimes I don't put it in water, for example, this morning there was a bit of rain here and I was cleaning the front hall so I threw a handful out on the concrete patch by our front door...which is where ours like to pee. Its drying up now and I'll sweep it up later. Its not as good as a scrub with the broom and some diluted washing powder (which I do fortnightly/weekly as needed) but its gets us between times when its damp -with rain not pee! I'm really smell sensitve and can't stand to leave it.
  • Thank you - i will be adding boilogiocal washing powder to the shopping list as we only use non-bio (sensitive skin's).

I came downstairs early this morn and to my horror my two (dogs that is, lol) must have had a peeing contest in the night. It was everwhere - the floor was covered in puddles (and my kitchen is a big room). Lol - i was gobsmacked, neither have ever done this before. Maybe the odd puddle once in a blue moon where they couldn't hold it till morn. I cleaned it all with anti bac spray and then done the washing powder/hot water mix and one thing i must say is it smells alot more pleasant than bleach. So thumbs up there!

I hope they don't make a habit of it though, yikes, or they'll be banished to their kennel at nights.

Word of warning - when you first wash it with bio powder it will lift the smell, so it will smell even worse first time you do it but stick with it as it does work.
It aint over til I've done singing....
