Yes, DHCP is enabled. What I can't figure out though is why that PC would be assigend a totally different and unrelated IP address to the rest on the network, and is obviously why it can't get an internet connection, but I don't know what to do to change it or why it's happened. Is it possible that a virus is causing this?

    Cheers :)

  • if your local IP address is returned as 169.254.y.z with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, the IP address was assigned by the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) feature of Windows XP Professional. This assignment means that TCP/IP is configured for automatic configuration, that no DHCP server was found, and that no alternative configuration is specified. This configuration has no default gateway for the interface.

    See here.

Thank you very much Toxteth, all sorted now :j :T :D

APIPA was switched on so I've manually assigned the TCP/IP settings and it's all connected again now ;)

    I owe you a  :D

Thats why I dont like DHCP. Not for a small network anyhow....

Its just as easy to enter ALL the IP's manually and use manuall DNS servers. That way if you have to make any firewall rules you can assign it to a certain p.c knowing its IP aint gonna change....

It's still best to have a very small DHCP pool on a small network in case you have someone plug their laptop/PC in temporarily and don't want to change their default "automatic assignment of IP Address and DNS servers" in TCP/IP.
