Virgin Trains Refund

I need help.
I bought 2 single Virgin Value Tickets to travel today from Manchester - Poole and come back on Sat. These tickets cost me £23.00 and are non-refundable.
Now the problem I have is that I had to cancel my trip as my Nan who I was going to visit was rushed into hospital for having a heart attack and so, can't have visiters etc.
I called Virgin after sales and was advised by someone in a call centre that no refund and no change of ticket. I advised my situation and that I wasn't looking for a full refund but a gesture of goodwill or something and advised that I always travel when I do and this was a one off. And said again "No refund, no change".
I asked to speak with a manager and was told that no managers on the floor or in the building, when I said that law states there must be a supervisor or manager at all times to take customer requests she informed me that they're all in a meeting and for me to call back later if so.
After calling back, still no managers around and still "No Refund or Change of Ticket".
Has anyone managed to get a refund, or how do I go about it? I don't mind only getting £10 back, as something is better than nothing, but I feel cheated that this was something out of my control and unplanned and stressful enough for me at the moment to worry about a ticket.
Any suggestions?!

Might be worth putting the case in writing (the travel date will have gone by then of course) but explain the full situation and also how calling the call centre was useless. I'm sure you could do without all the extra stress and hassle right now. Maybe send the tickets back too to prove you haven't used them and send it recorded.2p off is still 2p off!0

This is what Travel insurance is for....
Try to sell them on Ebay.

I have annual Travel Insurance taken out last November, how can this help?!?0

You can claim it off your insurance, not 100% without knowing your T&Cs, might be able to claim off you credit card as some cover you for travel insurance too.2p off is still 2p off!0
