Anyone with Vertigo claimed DLA ?

Hi
Does anyone know if you are able to claim DLA for a Vertigo Sufferer ?
My partner suffer's from Vertigo attacks and although this is obvoiusly a problem, it leads on to other problems like Panick attacks, being unable to be in a crowded place or sometimes even in a queue at the shops.
He has no confidence when it comes to things like learning to drive (altough this is something he would love to do) he would never attempt it.
He has had this condition for many years but never really complained or gone to doctors, he just gets on with it.
So if anyone has had a successful claim or unsuccessful could you please help
Thankyou

I would think that not having gone to the doctor would mean that a claim would be difficult.

I do know someone who has vertigo and claims DLA but they also suffer mental health difficulties which I think is more why they get the award.

DLA is based on the help you need for day to day living because of your illness/disability rather than actually what it is you have wrong - they woukld want to know what help he needs each day.

Does your husband get any other benefits such as incapacity benefit?

Perhaps also it may be worth your husband seeing a GP as according to this link, there are often causes which your GP may be able to do something about, perhaps medications or something?

    isnt vertigo controlled by tablets.

My mum suffers from some inner ear thing where things go spinning out of control, no tablets she's poorly, but as long as she takes her tablets her day is normal for her.

  • I have suffered from Vertigo in the past.

Any sufferer should be encouraged to see their GP in the first instance. Sometimes Vertigo can be caused by an inner-ear infection and antibiotics can be the most effective treatment. Also, a GP will be able to not only treat the symptoms but also determine the cause of the Vertigo.

Some homeopathic remedies are not recommended to be taken with prescribed medication as they can counterindicate (I think that is the correct word in English!)

You should always inform your GP if you are taking homeopathic remedies. Generally they will be perfectly fine (although there is little proof they are effective) but there are exceptions.

In reply to the OP....DLA is not given for a specific condition but for care and/or mobility needs.

I would encourage your partner to see the GP. It may be that the condition can be controlled with treatment.

No vertigo is not just controlled by tablets. I have a very severe balance disorder which vertigo is partly responsible. I also have other conditions that are severe. The combination of all my conditions has rendered me very disabled.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

  • One of my ex's suffered from a type of vertigo. It normally happened in the afternoons and more so on Friday nights and Saturday nights.

Luckily for him I knew what the problem was - too much Stella!!!
