Gloss paint going yellow

I noticed that the doors and loft hatch that I painted 9 months ago with Dulux gloss had started to go yellow. I rang the Dulux customer care department for advice. They advise that gloss paint can start to go yellow after 3 months. I find this totally unacceptable and was wondering if i had any consumer protection that would apply in this situation. I asked if there was a warning on the tin and he said there wasn't but anti-yellowing paint was available to purchase, presumably at extra cost.

Do you have any smokers in the house? I was just wondering if cigarette smoke could be a reason for the yellowing.

Noboby in the house smokes or ever has smoked. I could understand and expect yellowing if we did smoke.
  • I read that dark places and ammonia based cleaners can cause yellowing. It appears that water based paints do not yellow. It looks as though I`ll be doing the woodwork here in water based eggshell. Not good enough re dulux. Seems not to be `fit for purpose` ie white paint
  • I had the same problem with dulux white and my uncle advised me to try water based and it was much better.

  • I've contacted trading standards to see if they can help. Could open up a whole can of worms !
