We went many years ago and stayed in a campsite called LeLittoral just outside Talmont StHillaire and a few clics south of Les Sables dOlones. Very nice wooded site with nice pools and facilities.0

If you are taking your own camping stuff I'd try the French Federation Guide to Camping and Caravaning (Le Guide Officiel Camping-Caravaning F.F.C.C.). It contains about 11,000 entries for camp sites in France and is used by the French to decide where to go. It includes the ones used by British operators but most are the simpler sites. A star system is used as a rough guide to the range of facilities offered. All the sites we've used have had a good standard of cleanliness whatever the star rating.
Site descriptions are short, giving location, list symbols denoting facilities and (approx) prices. The best way to use it is to get to an area and then just stop at the site to see if you like the feel of it, if not move on to another. We have never had a problem finding locations at many lovely places we would never though of visiting. We have usually gone in July but have not had problems finding free spaces even in August but try to avoid travelling in the 'changeover' weekend at end of July/beginning of August time. Plan to be in your preferred area in the early afternoon for the best site availability and, if you like a location, ask even if there is a 'complet' sign as there may still be room.
The St Jean de Monts coastal area can be a little overpowering but there are many lovely places both a few kilometres inland and a little further south. We often stayed at the Municipal site in Avrille when the kids were smaller and then drove to the coast but haven't been there for a few years.
Details of the guide are on the FFCC site https://www.ffcc.fr giving a price of 16.00Eu and as yet Amazon aren't giving a price but seem the have an availability date of mid-March. The guide is mostly in French but the last one we had contained an explanation of the meaning of the symbols in English.

I've always found https://www.venueholidays.co.uk excellent for camping holidays. 15 consecutive years while the children grew up from 2 to 17, now looking forward to camping again with the grandchildren.0

Many thanks for the wealth of advice. We intend to take our own gear, but depending on the offer may opt for a complete pitch.
