Can hotels change their prices?

Hi,
I recently booked a 3 night stay on the internet in a hotel in England for myself and 4 friends. I gave my credit card details although a deposit was not taken as you pay in full once you arrive. The hotel have 'phoned to say that their internet price is wrong and it is actually double the price advertised and we had to either pay the real price or cancel! The whole reason we booked was because it was such a good deal!
We have booked flights and time off of work - are the hotel within their right to do this? I know if something is mis-priced in a shop, they generally honour the advertised price!
Please help!!!

Did they confirm the price to you and taken the payment off the card?
If so I would be complaining to them and threatening them with trading standards.
If they had advised you of the price change before taking your money and the offer was ridiculous to the 'average person' then they may have a case.0 -
The OP has stated that no money has been taken.
My guess is there is nothing you can do about it.
Have you tried any third party sites to see if the hotel is available from them.
It may help if you name the hotel and price etc0 -
as you never paid anything, yes they can.0

did they send any confirmation. by email/ post?
check the hotel site, to see what prices they are quoting now.. (and terms!)Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
which hotel, where, when ?
Lets see if we can find something there are some deals about.0 -
Yes they can.
Even a shop is not obliged to honour a 'mis-price', although may choose to do so.
I suggest you look for alternative hotels that would use the flights you have already booked, and once you have a price for an acceptable alternative offer to pay this amount to the hotel you tried to book.0 -
One post from the OP asking for help and then nothing..very frustrating0

As the GM of an (apprantly much better) hotel, I can only give my professional opinion - if you have confirmation in the form of a letter, fax or e-mail then they have to honour the rate booked. If not, demand to speak to the manager and ask them to look at the booking history (most hotel computer systems will show changes made on any given reservation, so they will be able to see the original price, even if they have subsequently changed it.
Which site did you book through? if it one of the more established ones you would have certainly received confirmation and they will be able to help you hold the rate booked.
Without confirmation you may struggle. However if you really want to take them to the wall, call the local press and ask them to meet you in the lobby to document your arrival and the actions of the hotel. A call to Trading Standards might not be a bad idea too.
You need to let the advisoprs on the forum know which site you booked on and which hotel it is for - you will get better advice that way.I am the General Manager of an hotel in Telford and am happy to offer advice. I can't promise to be perfect, but I'm happy to try to help.

There was a fault on a major(Jarvis) chains booking system that allowed you to book rooms with confirmation for £0 would they have to be honoured?
Don't know if it is still there.0
