Mate from Oz visiting

Hi all im new to this forum,im 41,considered attractive by my mother, not going bald much,i cant see the back of my swede in the mirror anyway, err wrong forum sorry, ahem. :D

Got a good mate visiting uk from australia in July for 5 weeks. He has looked into hiring a car for his visit but i have offered to buy a reasonable car such as a golf tdi for around £1k and then sell it when he leaves. He'll refund any losses incurred.

What would the best way for him to get insured? Should/ could i insure it and put the car in my name on log book and name him as a named driver or should he be the keeper and insure it himself for 5 weeks? Or else...??

He was a uk citizen until he emmigrated 5 years ago.

Cheers.

  • Hi there

It doesn't really matter whos name the insurance is in, just so long as it's the same as the name on the log book!! If you are selling the car when he goes, it's probably best to do it in your name to avoid awkward questions from prospective purchasers.

There are quite a few insurers that offer short term insurance for cars. You can search this forum for "short period car cover" or some such and get the details of who gives the best prices.

When you get the quote, have yourself as the policyholder (if you follow my advice as above), but your mate as the MAIN driver; it may cost a little more, but it's best to be honest so you don't end up coming unstuck in the event of a claim.

Oh and with regard to your opening sentence; sorry but you are just not my type.

one option may be to add him to your existing policy, and also add the new vehicle as a temporary vehicle?

i don;'t know much about these temporary insurers so might be worth asking your current insurer about this option? just a thought, hope it helps:beer:
