What’s your DIY Wow Factor?

Options
Folks,

I am currently decorating my house from top to bottom. New floors, new paint on the walls, some new furniture, new bathroom …you get the picture.

The thing I’m really dreading is the completion of the whole project in the next few weeks, without that ‘something special’. I’ve had friends who have completed similar redecorations, only to find the place looking new but somehow rather soul-less.

What I really want is that one something that will really impress, but on a reasonable budget. My neighbour has suggested I put in some spotlights throughout, whereas the OH wants some folding doors to replace the dated sliding ones at present. Other things I have considered are: real wood floors, feature wallpaper, roman blinds instead of curtains, an original painting or similar work of art…….

So what one thing have you got that that really gives your home that Wow factor?

Sometimes one expensive item can do wonders for a room. Either a nice new ceiling light, I love them modern candelabras, or a new mirror, picture on the wall

I know exactly what you mean as we are in the same process.

We decided to install an electric wall hung imitation limestone fire. It certainly lifts the room and imparts a feeling of warmth.

In addition we hung a large very contemporary abstract picture, to add to the others.

The correct lighting is also important.

A nice large modern rug also works wonders on a wooden floor.

I know what you mean too!

I've recently 'done' my sitting room. It's a very big room with high ceilings and I went for the pale minimalist look. It looked and felt like an aircraft hanger :o Then I found a huge mirror 8' x 5' and had it hung over the fireplace...what a transformation! As well as being a focal point the light now pings around the room icon7.gif

I've always found the light fitting or a mirror adds the final touch. I don't always buy new either - sometimes just switching them around helps. I'd bought one for the dining room but ended up putting it into the hallway, much bigger than the one I'd bought originally but looks fantastic. Same with pictures really; my young son thought it looked a bit bare on the upstairs landing (all white but different finishes) and suggested a picture from my room hung over the stairs - I tried it out and to be honest, though not something I'd have thought of, it looks really effective. Sometimes worth having other's opinions.

For me the real wow factor is a good finish and colour choice. No sloppy paint marks on walls/ceilings, woodwork with no runs etc.

Agree with your OH the sliding doors have to go. A lick of paint doesn't and a new rug doesn't disguise a 20 year old replacement door! Better to do it now than think "we should have changed that" when it's all finished.

Who would be impressed by some downlighters? lol

You could get some stone lions out the front each side of double gold painted gates. Or some cladding. Or a huge LCD telly that's far too big for the room with a rubbish picture quality.

Who are you trying to impress?

I'm sure those extra sockets in the kitchen and less furniture in the living room really add to the wow factor. Inspiring.
