Travel insurance questions

Options
Hi,
Myself, my mother, and my GF are going on holiday in April and I'm looking for some travel insurance.

Question 1; does my GF count under a family policy, or should I buy her a separate policy (we don't live together, I know that sometimes makes a difference)?

Q2; my GF is currently kinda recovering from an ongoing mystery eating/digestive/IBS type condition. Does this count as a pre existing medical condition? Do I need to declare it? It should prove a problem while we're there, we're willing to take the risk as its not really very serious, so where do we stand?

Thanks.

Dont think your gf wuld be covered under a family policy, try a couple policy and get mum to get her own single policy. (this would be the cheapest way, just yu and your mum on a policy paying for 4 or 5 people family would be daft and then having to pay single for yur g/f)
It's always the best policy, (no pun intended) to)e honest about the pre-existing problems. If they discover it during a claim for something else,
the whole polic will be cancellled. At best you will pay nothing more at worst
it'll be an extra tenner/fiver. Peace of mind is priceless.
I use Goldfish, its about £1.45 per day for full cover, havent seen any cheaper but I'm sure there will be someone out there who has.
    Dont forget your EHIC cards
    and lastly - have a great time:j :j
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Please be aware that if you are taking the earlier posters advice that a "Couple Policy" normally only covers you if you actually live together, its best to check the Insurers definition before you commit yourself to make sure you are covered.

In addition if you ommit to declare an Existing Medical Condition they will not cancel the policy they will simply not pay any claims as a "Direct Result" of that medical condition. You also need to declare any existing medical conditions for immediate family or any one your trip depends on eg a business partner even if they are not travelling as if you do not then again any claims as a Direct Result of the medical condition eg you want to cancel the trip to attend a funeral will not be paid if you have not declared them.

Your g/f will not count under a family policy and if you are over 16 then you will probably not be covered by a family policy in your mothers name unless you are 18 or under (Some companies go to a higher age) and in full time education

If I'm travelling with a boyfriend I just take out a policy that covers two people - doesn't matter whether you are a couple or not, live together or not - you just give your name and their name and ages and that usually suffices. Aside from that, I would declare any existing medical treatment just in case.

Sandc you are right in that you can take out a policy for two indivdual adults and would be covered. The previous poster recommended a "Couple" Policy, this includes a discount for being a couple which the Insurers normally define as Legally Married or Common Law Partner but providing you both live at the same address.

I'm guessing the OP and his g/f do not live together so him getting a "Couple" policy would mean the policy would probably be invalid.

Travel Insurance is one of the worst policies for small print and most of the Travel Insurers use the small print to their advantage so you have to make sure everything is correct on a travel policy.

OK thanks again guys. We are both actually between 16 and 18 and in full time ed so that might help us. I don't quite get this whole existing med condition thing though. I have occasional eczema and hayfever. Do I have to put that down? And what about if I have a cold the week before or whatever. How far does it go? There must be a point at which you can stop declaring surely?

EDIT: This is just getting silly now. My gf's condition would, I guess be classed as undiagnosed and ongoing at the doctors, but its just a slight problem with keeping food down kinda thing. What am I supposed to do!!??

Travel Insurers would not be interested in your cold or hay fever, you can mention the eczema to them, they will almost certainly say no problem at all.

Your girlfriends condition will cause a problem as unless it has been diagnosed the Insurers will not no how to rate it so will almost certainly exclude any claims as a direct result of it. If the doctor diagnoses it you will probably be able to find someone to cover it but they may wish to charge extra

Ok thanks again. Well if they're going to exclude all claims from it then can't I just go to a normal insurance company and not tell them about it? Wouldn't that achieve the same result? Little chance of a doctor diagnosing it properly, her sisters have similar things which have been going on for several years without having been given an actual exact name kinda thing, if you see what I mean. :D

You can indeed use a normal Insurance Company as they simply exclude any claims as a direct result of the medical condition. Be aware that anyone else travelling with her who has seperate cover may also find their insurer excludes cover for the medical condition unless she declares it
