How do i find out the ip address of someones comp?

Just doing a bit of detective work, i have someones email address at googlemail.com. They have actually caused me some stress through pretending to be me, so how can i find out who/where they are? I do know they are probably in my council borough.

• Would it not be better to reported them if they are pretending to be you. Sounds a bit weird/dodgy to me.

I doubt you'll be able to find out who or where they are.
• if they sent you an email you may find it in the email

or its properties

that will show you the isp maybe

not sure how you will get closer to there location by that, maybe someone else needs to help trick them into providing info.

i had lots trouble with someone and by tricking them i got lots info and found there home address and the police sorted the rest out for me.

i had to be crafty.

ive been left in peace now.

good luck

i know it sounds odd, but i suppose they have done nothing illegal.. it has actually been someones mistake,in that they believe this email addy is registered to me,when it isnt..and what they are doing ,i am getting accused of!..i have simply sent an email to her, asking who she is ,hoping for a reply!!
i suppose when i do know who/where she is,i still havent a clue what to do then!!

You need to view the full headers of the email they sent but this might not be their relative IP depending on how techie they are as they can route through proxies

Gmail doesn't display the IP address for mail sent via the web portal:

• One thing to keep in mind with Email is you only need a password to receive it. It is quite possible for someone to send emails seemingly from your email account without any of your login details.

this is a common spamming technique, especially of you have a common name.

You send an email as say emma.wright@mail.com (it a common name an many of us know an Emma) with a hook line message a to thousands of people and wait for a reply. Then you know that the account is active and you can sell it off. All this is probably done from some poor unsuspecting git who has a trojan on his PC so that you can't track the ip back.

Also it could be the case where you have a trojan on your pc and you are actually sending it.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
