Thank you for all your fabulous advice! At the garden centre today they had a pond kit on sale so I snapped it up and will be using my pond liner to create a fabulous wildlife pond. I will keep you all posted!

OH! I was going to suggest that in fact you DO use the sink (providing the plug hole is bunged up). Ask someone that has a pond, for a jug or two of their water as it will contain organisms, or failing that, safely gather some from a nearby pond in a milk container. You can then add tap water to fill it up. Scrounge a few oxygenating plants and then put either a small log or stones in so that anything can crawl in/out.

We did this with a wilkinsons container last year, and had a frog/newt/toad and water snails arrive, but where from?

I have a small pond made from one of those big barrels, no frogs last year. I really don't know what plants to put in it. Atm all it has in it is duckweed.
It's deep, deep enough for frogs to overwinter in and I put some soil at the bottom, but I could do with some advice about what to plant in it, or can you get a plant that floats?

I would suggest a couple of buches of the stuff that is weighted down by lead as it oxygenates and grows well, even over winter.

Different varieties given to me, are simply placed in plant pots and pebbles/gravel used to hold them down and they grow with no soil at all.

Apart from the water lily I can't remember what we put in it at first. :o I have the plants in pots on bricks at various heights in the pond according to the depth at which they should be planted. I don't think you need particular plants but frogs and toads like the big leaved varieties as they give them shelter.
