Canon Powershot S2IS if you can get it on offer or refurb is a great camera with 12X zoom and is very stable. Bit bigger which reduces camera shake. 5 megapixel. Good in low light too. Only problem is it's not too clever with redeye.
The new models may mean a price drop as this one's over a year old or more.

My brother has just bought a cannon digital sealed camera and the lens he bought for it cost £1000, so that’s £2000 in a camera and lens.
He does weddings and portraits and has produced some amazing pictures over the years, he started with a really basic camera and read reviews and got bigger and better cameras.
The wife bought a cheap camera, but the pictures aren’t really good quality and so we are looking for a semi decent one at the moment.
His web site is here if you want to take a look, send him a message and tell him what you think of his pictures

I just upgraded from a simple point and shoot to a lovely casio EX-z110 ...... you have lots to play around with, if u have time and wish to do so, but has a great snapshot or best shot function. Absolute no shutter lag at all. a massive 6 meg pix, metal body and 3x optical zoom. The video function is exelent, as good as or better some camcorders.

Got mine from argos and is just £169 ........ my best buy camera EVER!!!
