Got a Euro Travel Moneycard from LTSB when I moved from Nationwide - that'll do for Spain methinks! (Yes, I know there is no fee from NW in Spain but it's the principle!)
£7.50 to get one and £5 to reissue it when it expires (only valid for a certain period of time - unspecified). £1.50 per cash withdrawal. Charge of 2.75% if you want to use the card for any currency other than the initial one.

If it's a matter of principle, I'd go for the principle of having the card that makes no charge!

The card cost me nothing (as I have a Silver account), and I will carry sufficient money on me for general spends. Card will only be used for purchases, in Euro. Card will be disposed of when it expires. So charges won't apply to me.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Maybe not, but I bet currency commision will.

I am convinced that Nationwide will still give a better deal than LSTB in Europe.

Whilst I am in no doubt of that, all my cash is now in a LTSB account, and my Nationwide account is zero. By transferring a wedge out to nationwide and using the card, I'll be losing the interest that would have accumulated in the LTSB account.

Plus also the fact that it will involve faffing about transferring money by BACS as Faster Payments isn't with NW yet. Also, the fact that NW pi**ed me off by removing 99% of their benefits in the last 12 months...:p

An interesting question that no-one's mentioned (I think) is now that Nationwide are making/not losing money on most foreign transactions, will they start paying cashback on those?

    Somehow, I doubt it...

How does the Cash Builder card fit into this? Do they/will they charge to use the ATM abroad with this card?

is that the "cashcard" account? If so, the answer is not now, but later - suggest you look at the main thread for full details http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1510469

Cumberland BS does not charge for using one of their cards abroad... http://www.cumberland.co.uk/current-accounts
...but you need to live in their northwest catchment area to open an account with them.

As far as foreign use is concerned Cumberland BS will be in the same boat as Nationwide from June. (The sterling conversion amount debited to your accounts will include any VISA processing fees. ) But their current accounts do still offer some modest credit interest and their overdraft rates are much better.
  • about these prepaid visa cards you use abroad - my friend had one when we were travelling together which was all great apart from when we got a hotel to agree to refund us for something which we had paid for with this card and found the prepaid card couldn't process a refund (after a lot of faffing and because the hotel staff didnt know what to do we got the money paid back to us on an ordainary debit card) but just wondering if this is a general problem with prepaid cards or not?
