So few brain cells, so many ISPs

So ticked off with BT cost, that I have spent all afternoon trying to decide on a new ISP/home phone package in NI and my postcode area - I don't have that many to choose from in this area anyway.

Before I lose the will to live, can I ask for any pos or neg feedback - my choice is between:

TalkTalk
Tiscali [who aren't doing too well on another thread]
IDNet
or
O2

I fit the box for all above. Thanks.

Hi Nomad - i changed recently to Talktalk from Orange. Much cheaper and it is a combined pc/phone package for £16.99 a month. This includes a free wireless router. (You will pay £29.99 connection fee though). Very happy with their service and they arranged the changeover with phone and internet meaning you do not have to contact BT at all! Hth.
    Payment A Day £15 (started 17/5/14) :j

O2 have a good reputation, especially if you have a contract mobile as it's cheaper. Tiscali aren't the best and Talktalk had a really poor reputation for a long time, I don't know if they've improved much.

Watch out for TalkTalk if you have children. Initial price looks good but by the time you 'add-on' the necessary extras to keep the kids safe on-line it's really not that competitive. Heard REALLY bad reports about Tiscalli. Friend got bill in for over 500 quid. Turned out despite having all necessary security, calls were being made 2 Bangladesh over his line. Tiscali were no help at all!
  • I changed from BT to O2 last October, they are fantastic the price is very good especially if an O2 mobile customer or in my case I got mine through my daughter's O2 account. The speed is excellent and customer service is a free phone number and they are very helpful. O2 also supply a free wireless router and free connection. I think I pay about £7.50 per month for an up to 8 mb speed. All in all very pleased and would recommend. They also keep you informed every step of the way from the day you place your order for broadband up until your connection date.

  • i'm with o2 and am really happy with them - Was really easy to change and an awful lot quicker than other (only 5 days) service centre is uk based which was a big plus for me after using tiscali before - Is cheap as well only about £10 for the best package if you are with o2 mobile.

I have broadband with BT and my calls package with Talktalk. A comment on each:

I came to the end of my broadband contract with BT last November. I called them and mentioned the O2 offer of broadband for £7.50 per month. BT immediately reduced their price to £7.49 per month from £13.99, so I took another 12 month contract.

I noticed on my last Talktalk phone bill that I had been charged for calls to an engaged number at the start of February (I was calling my son's school on two mornings during the heavy snow to see if the school was open. So was everyone else so I kept getting an engaged tone). Talktalk charged 10p for every call, 17 in total and they refused to refund me saying that I must have reached voicemail, which I didn't. I'm now looking for another calls provider!

Hi there, I was with Toucan until they migrated all their customers to Pipex   now things are a nightmare, I developed a fault with my line and reported this to them, I am still waiting for it to be fixed. Is Tiscali part of Pipex? if so avoid Tiscali.

A number of IVRs connect you to an engaged tone provided by them meaning the call has been answered but the recipricant has chosen to play you an engaged tone. Did you hear a click before the sound of the tone?

Nomad25, if you have any questions about the TalkTalk service or want any more information give me a nudge.

    Cheers

I can only recommend ADSL24. I get the (up to) 24 meg service for 18.49 a month.

It is rock solid (not one downtime in more then 18 months). The good thing is the Service is running on a rolling contract with only 1 months notice. That is good if the service is going downhill and you want to change quickly without any hassle.
  • Hi Flogthedog
You were very fortunate to have BT reduce their charges to £7.49 a month. When I was cancelling my broadband BT asked if there was anything they could offer in order for me to take out another year contract. When I suggested that if they could match the price of o2 ie £7.50 per month I might consider staying with them, the answer was no but they could offer £12.99 instead of what I had been paying which was £17.99. So good for you being able to swing that from BT.
