Slilent traps

Hi I have MacAlpine Silent Traps fitted on my bathroom sinks - and they don't work!
The water in the basin takes a long time to clear and gurgles when it eventualy does. I can release the water when i open the trap but then water obviously drips everywhere
Any body got any ideas??
