Try out Leeds - it's great and now cheaper

GNER has just released 100,000 seats to the hot spot of the North, Leeds, for just £9.50 one way. They have also released a further 40,000 First Class seats at £29.50.

Valid for travel until 31 March, 7 days a week, but there are a limited number of seats per day so you may need to be flexible with your dates and times. tip: There is a bit of a trick to the booking system. Once you have entered your search criteria and are on the search result page, you need to click on the 'Singles from 9.50' link highlighted in red.

Even when this offer isn't on, you can get Leeds->London 1st class for £57 return. You need to book specific trains in advance, but it's good :D
I think it's called 1st advanced or something.

(work was paying, I just needed a receipt)

(I think there's also an even cheaper return 1st class ticket, but that's super super advance, and never managed one of those - I reckon they only have 1 of those per train!)

From £6 one way with Midland Mainline
  • From what i can remember the only MM trains leave Leeds for London AM only and vice versa arrive in Leeds PM only. They also go via the Midlands (Sheffield / Chesterfield - c'mon you blues!) which make a longer journey than via the East Coast main line.

    Oh, and Leeds Rocks!

I must say, even though I live on the other side of the Pennines, that I agree with this statement, it's a lovely city and within reach of some lovely countryside. My DD goes to uni there and she loves it.

  • I live in Leeds and love it. All that a big city has to offer - great shops, restaurants, theatre, nightlife etc. - but 15 minutes drive and you are heading out into the Dales. And even if you stay in the city it is the greenest city in the UK - loads of fantastic parkland on the doorstep - try Roundhay or Temple Newsome for great walks with cafes and pubs close by.

I booked cheap train tickets and travelodge £10 rooms for a mid week break in Leeds in easter holidays.

Any suggestions of where to go and eat for 2 women ? Not going to be out partying, mainly catching up and eating !

    Thanks in advance

My favorite Italian in Leeds is Brio, not the tiny one in the Lights complex but the larger one near the hospital/Town Hall. It's very busy at lunchtime with business people so evenings are better. The Queens hotel used to do a nice afternoon tea but can't compare with The Crown Plaza in Manchester.Their homemade scones are to die for.
  • Leodis, Sovereign Street (I think), Harvey Nicks (of course). The Corn Exchange is worth a visit, amazing building and lots of tiny boutique type shops selling quirky things. Enjoy your trip.

This is part of The Calls hotel complex -
Informal, full of buzz and action, Brasserie 44 is hugely popular with Leeds' fashionable set who appreciate the great value food and drink, which has been awarded two rosettes by the A.A.

Hansa's is a fantastic vegetarian Gujarati restaurant on North St (just along from the Headrow) - wonderful wonderful food. Brios is great too for Italian. Most of my other favourites are slightly out of town (the Millrace is worth the trip!).

    Have fun.
