Incorrectly billed

I would be grateful for any advise on the following scenario please:

I moved into my new build property in August 2006. Previously there was a house of the same address which was demolished.

The property that i moved into was a 50% share between myself and Bromford housing.

Upon moving into the property a final inspection took place with Bromford, who took gas and electricity meter readings to give to the suppliers.

I was told and given letters that British Gas were my gas supplier and NPower were my electricity provider and i took it upon myself to pass the readings and meter serial numbers onto the suppliers myself just in case Bromford forgot to do so.

In April 2007 i decided to move supplier to EON to take advantage of their dual fuel tarif.

I provided final reading to British Gas and NPower and had given various readings when requested throughout my time with the suppliers.

In the early summer of 2008 i decided to cap my rate with EON.

In January 2009 i received a high bill from EON so i called them to query it.

I was asked to provide meter readings and serial numbers. Eventually it came to light that i was being billed for my electricity using my readings on a meter that was no longer in use.

After EON had brought this to my attention i contactedBritish Gas.

British Gas confirmed that they had ownership of my electricty meter, the address they had for the meter was incorrect and that is why i had never received a bill from them. They had been billing someone else for my useage. I was told that i would have to get a refund from EON and NPower for my electricity and that British Gas would bill me for my useage.

I contacted both EON and NPower and both companies on initial investigation confirmed that indeed British Gas were my electricity supplier. Both companies said that I would be contacted in due course.

I am still waiting to hear from EON and NPower but came home to find a bill on my doorstep this afteroon from British Gas for nearly £800.

The bill is incorrect as it starts from Jan 2006 and i did not move into the property until Aug 2006. The bill states that British Gas oobtained various readings from my meter dating back to March 2007. They told me that the reason that i had not been billed was because the meter serial number was registered at the wrong address so i'm not sure how this is possible.

I am extremely frustrated as it looks as if i am going to be charged for my electricity at rates i did not agree to is there anything i can do, i would be grateful for any help or advise.

Thank you.

  • Bump!.......
  • British Gas will bill you.

Send them proof of purchase or proof of tenancy so you only get billed from August 2006.

they will estimate a read for then.

    Incorrectly billed

    Hi tully187villa

Sounds like the electricity meter was wrongly registered when the property was re-built in 2006. This can happen and there are industry guidelines to sort it out.

As BG had ownership of the meter from 2006 they will charge you from then. Therefore, all the money paid to us for electricity will be refunded.

If you have not heard from us give us a call on 01234 323122. This will take you straight to the team who deal with these matters. Give them the Meter Serial Number and the account number used to charge you in the past.

This will speed up the process of returning your money.

    Hope this helps.
