are the dvla wrong?
Bit of a long story but here goes, my brother in law bought a Mitsubishi Shogun in 2007 with an irish reg. plate. It was manufactured in 1995, but only first registered with dvla in UK 2000. He put his own cherished number plate on car but recently bought another car and transfered his cherished plate to new car. This is were problem begins, he has just received the new documents in post for his Shogun and they have given him a registration plate in a W. I called the DVLA for him and explained that i thought it was illegal to have a registration that made the car look younger than it is, only to be told that as it was first registered in UK in 2000 it is correct. He has the car off the road just now anyways and we are going to follow it up on monday, but im looking for some advice on here before i call back. Am i correct in thinking that it is indeed illegal to put a 2000 registration on a 1995 car?.. sorry if its a bit hard to follow, im a bit lost myself trying to get my head around it.

DVLA issue plates based on "date of first registration". On this basis, it is correct. Confusing, but correct.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

I believe the V5 will show the date of manufacture, if it was declared correctly when registered. The plate will indicate date of first registration with the DVLA.0

I brought a Car backi from South Africa what is important is date of first registration wherever that was so in your case the Repiblic of Ireland. The question is was it firs registered on or around 1995 or 2000?
If date of first registration can not be determined the fall back should be the date of manufacture ie 1995. Now i know when I brought mine in they were going to register it as an 1989 (year of man) but I proved first registration was 1990 so it was registered as a "G reg" and not an "F reg"
So when was it's first registration (ie in Ireland)?
The other thing is it would appear to be in your favour and if the can't see the mistake is it worth fighting them? Having said that might have insurance implications?0 -
the car was first registered in 1995 in ireland , then 2000 here, hence the confusion.0

Should be on a 1995 plate then. I presume it wasn't your brother who registered it here? I would contact them again and explain your problem and if they can't be arsed then leave it but keep all copies of correspondence in case of future problems.0

no it wasnt , he didnt buy it until 2007.0

Yes they have screwed up.
When the car is a grey import a registration should be issued based on the date of manufacturer if the date of registration for the previous country cannot be determined.0 -
Update, DVLA have messed up , they are looking to see who issued it and we should have a new registration number by end of the week, fingers crossed we can have car back on the road by weekend.0
