Imperial / Metric Meters - BRITISH GAS

Can someone help. I have today received an amended gas bill back dated to Feb'07 to Feb'09 as it appears that they have been billing me incorrectly and have mentioned that this is because I have a 4 number dial meter (Imperial) and they have been putting a zero infront of my readings, meaning that I actually owe another £727.53...!! My first ever bill has a reading of only 4 numbers then as time went on a zero appeared in front of the actual reading...they have stated that they can reimburse 50% as they can not recover any outstanding debt of over 12 months. Can they recover any if they have messed this up....I pay by d/d every month and they have caused this through there own incompetance. (How do you know if you have a metric or imperial meter).? Thank you Glen

I think you will have to pay something, perhaps you can persuade them as a goodwill gesture to reduce the amount you have to pay even more.
If your meter is metric it will say m3 on it somewhere. If it is imperial it will say something like ft or cu.ft.0 -
the 50% reduction they are offering is goodwill - it's not something they have to do. As I understand it. The 12 month should actually refer to unbilled accounts, not corrective invoices. Nice to know they are being helpful though!
A zero in front of any reading should make no difference.
I would go through all the figures on your bills taking note of whether the meter is imperial or metric and making sure the conversion factor has been applied correctly or not in all cases. Also check the readings follow on from each other etc.
If it's all correct now, pay up. If it's not, tell them why you think it's wrong, and take it from there. I wouldn't argue asking for more reduction if it's correct now as they might withdraw the one they have offered!Indecision is the key to flexibility

Thank you to those that have responded. I did contact British Gas and they told me the person that offered 50% etc, etc was wrong to do so. I have now logged a formal complaint following advise from Ofgem/Consumer Direct...fingers crossed..!!0

Received a call from British Gas yesterday and they have confirmed that they were wrong to back date there charges for the past 2 years and that the information and "offers" that were freely offered and incorrectly offered by there opperatives have resulted them to credit back the past two years charges and start a fresh from the 14th February on the correct calculation meaning that I have had to increase my d-d to £50 per month.
Great result and it just shows that a polite letter and a little advise provided by others can go a long way...!!0
