Extremely High Elec cost for 2 bed flat... what do you think?

Hi all,

Just posting this as I have recently been a tad alarmed at the rate my brother is being charged for electricity.

He currently rents a 2 bed flat with his mate, it is 100% electric, no gas. They have a big TV and Xbox which wouddl be the main plugged in appliances that get used the most! Apart from the usual fridge and cooker (not used everyday) and mobile phone chargers that is pretty much about it. They have their heating on for about 90 mins in the morning and a few hours in the evening. They are also on a prepayment meter.

Now they tend to be spending £60+ per week!

I was round there a few weeks ago helping them have a bit of a "spring clean" and I popped the heating on for most of the day and it used near on £15 that day!

Surely this is not right? I understand that they obviously have no gas to pay but at approx £240+ a month, that seems crazy!

Am I right in thinking this or not?

We are in a 2 bed all electric flat. We've used over £700 in less than 4 months.

Makes a difference what type of heating it is. Check it's not a two rate day/night meter - in which case it'd be cheaper to heat overnight (which may not help much if heat is needed in evenings!).

Also check tariffs/prices and suppliers - we'd be paying a lot more with the most expensive supplier rather than who we're with now!

Next time I move, I'm aiming for a place with gas!

We use approx £1200 in total through the year - so it'll be a lot better in the summer!
