Replacement combi boiler

Options
We've just had a quote from Northern Gas Heating for replacing our troublesome and very inefficent old Alpha combi boiler.

Supply and fit Glowworm flexi 30 KW Combi
5 x TRV's
1 x new radiator (for bedroom) + pipework
System flush & comission
bonding to gas pipe and water pipe
Thermostat and controller
5 year Parts and labour warranty

£2880 inc VAT 24 month 0% apr or 60 months on 5.9% apr

Is this reasonable?

The finance option is quite important to us as our credit history isn't fantastic and we can't afford it as a one off payment and other finance would be very expensive.

Well that boiler wouldn't cost much more than £700 inc. flue if you go by t'internet prices. So it really depends if you think approx £2100 is reasonable for the rest of the work.

It's not a hugely expensive quote, but it's not what I'd call cheap... and we all know cheap isn't always the best. Certainly get another quote if I was you. Do 'Northern Gas Heating' have a good repuatation? Do you know anyone who has had a boiler fitted by them?

Do they actually employ their own engineers or do they just sub it out? Are you anywhere near Greater Manchester BTW?

ha ha ha ha ha ha heatline,
£399 for a boiler and £250 TO INSTALL all i can say is be prepared for a few years of problems and putting your hand in your pocket a good couple of times....... Good luck! Any one reading this post and considering following this ops advice turn your computor off and go have a lie down to forget it all! Avoid heatline, avoid installers that charge £250, avoid B&Q.

I have to agree with gasbag to a point. B&Q stock some decent heating parts. Pumps, zone valves, thermostats etc. However, anyone shopping for a new boiler should NEVER buy any boilers sold by B&Q. Your average top of the range boiler retails at £750 - £950. If anyone sells a boiler for £400, it probably cost under £150 to produce. Many companies have tried this budget approch before. Ocean, Chaffotaux, Ravenheat. All awful boilers, to the point where Ocean and Chaffotaux went bust.
Regarding your quote, Glowworm boilers are quite good but i would reccommend Worcester or Vaillant. Worcester are the best on the market, Vaillant a close second. Your installer should be happy to advise you on your options but, remember, some installers get special deals to fit certain makes of boiler. Looks like your labour charge is around £2000. Sounds a lot for a straight boiler swap, new radiator and a few thermostats. My recommendation, get a couple more quotes.

There is nothing particularly wrong with Heatline boilers. They are assembled in Turkey and seem to use the same common (Italian) components as many other boilers. Their service agents seem to be OK and I believe that they have a two year warranty but it’s been a few years since I fitted one so I might be wrong.

The biggest problem with these and other B&Q sourced boilers is that they are very often installed cheaply, badly and usually illegally.

But if your on an extremly small budjet and just need something to keep you going for a couple of years I dont see the problem. We've had ours a year and had no problems with it!
